I live in the sticks, from memory about 5km from the 'cabinet' with FTTC via *old* copper wire (at least the overhead cable's probably 50 years old and that's about 500m before it goes underground).

Normally I used to get about 20Mbps DL and 20ms or so latency.

Netflix etc. has been as flakey as fuck for the last couple of weeks, I speed checked (BT app won't work) so I used 'speedtest.net' or at least the Ookla App associated with it. I was regularly getting speeds of 2.5Mbps and latencies of 60-70ms.

I reset the router and it made no difference.

But... when I choose a different server the speed improves to 17-18Mbps and the latency is back to normal. Thing is that server's in Telford whereas the closest ones (Bath/Bristol) are 2-3Mbps and 60-70ms. Other servers around the country are at different speeds and latencies but nothing seems to make any sense (latency is not proportional to distance).

I borrowed a neighbour's 'BT Hub' and the speeds aren't any better on the 'Telford' server but are consistent(ish) across a range of servers.

What the fuck is going on?

I can understand 'routing problems' and 'it's complicated' but why the difference when I use a different Hub (it's a Hub6 rather than my Hub5).

Ideas on 'why'?

BT support really is shit so I don't rate my chances of getting another hub..

I thought openreach didn't allow FTTC on such lines longer than 3km (where it
would normally be slower than ADSL speeds)?

Not so much a speedtester, but what does the BT availability checker say?

<https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/>

chop out your phone number, and exchange name, cabinet etc and post the rest ...

Would seem to indicate about 1.3ish km to cabinet.

But any line-speed below 13.1 Mbps (or 10.4 if it's not classed as a clean line)
would be slow enough to sling it back to your ISP for investigation.

Thanks. I don't know where I got '5km ish' from; I thought it was a discussion with
someone that came out once.

BT's 'guarantee' is 18Mbps but it's a fucker getting them to stand behind this!

I've a little consultancy I'm doing at the moment but once that's finished (and
the shoulder breaking shed is painted, wired and feather-boarded) I'll be back at
them - that is if the service hasn't completely collapsed or fixed itself- which is what I'm
hoping for.

It's worth trying them, and if you have no luck, get one off That Ebay

After the hassle and contradictory messages that's what I'm doing (have done).

OpenReach may not be over inclined to do much, particularly since the
Max Obs is 23.6. However I have just got BT to move my connection at the
cabinet to a different rack and my line is now constantly good. Could
not get Vodafone to do anything, but the new ISP called OpenReach
straight away.
