Got back from a small ride to Alicante late on Friday night.

It seemed like a good idea, 3rd week in October, book a ferry in 2 days
time and ride to Alicante for a beer.

As expected, the warm dry October weather broke on the Wednesday as I
headed down to Portsmouth. Good job I was in full waterproof gear.

From St Malo I headed down to Bordeaux vai the autoroute (to just get
the distance done), by which time I had too many layers on and was
starting to shed them.

Then it was up and over the Pyrenees Oloron Sainte Marie and Canfranc to
just outside Zaragoza. I know there are other routes, but at this time
of year the roads are empty and the autumn colours were ablaze.

After truckstop Motel I headed down to Alicante, avoiding motorways, and
across the very spaghetti western landscape. After about 1/2 an hour,
despite the blazing sun I was feeling chill and needed t ochange back to
winter gloves. It may have had something to do with climbing to 1400m as
the road twisted up.

Originally I had inteneded to come back via Calais, but I must be
getting old and was not looking forward to the prospect of a possibly
wet slog up through northern France, so managed to grab one of the last
places on the Santander/Plymouth ferry for the following Friday.

This meant after a couple days of drinking beer I was able to head out
across Spain for an explore. From Cuenca to Birgos I selected (ok,
google selected) a cmplete non highway route across the mountains and
valleys. Stunning as you drop down twisty bits, across a valley floor,
thorugh a hilltop village and over a plain again.

A must revisit area.

The less said about the delays on the ferry back, the better. Other than
fuck Brexit!

using the Plymouth Santander route. A bit earleir than I usually go but it
seems there aren't many ferry slots left as presumably, there are thousands
of people like me with vouchers to use or lose before they epxire next
year.

This is an open invite trip organised via a Fb group. As people might plan
to travel via different routes I have proposed assembling in Pau on 20 Sept
2022. That gives me a day and a half by myself in the bits I refer to
above, staying in the Parador de Arg�maniz on 19 Sept.

She gets very seasick, very easy.
We used it in 2008. She wasn't happy.

I get bored.
It suited me on this occasion, but the delays were a PITA as well.

My last trip in 2019 from Portsmouth was a cracker in the �conomi� ship.
Most people disappeared to their cabins leaving a small number with good
sea legs to enjoy their beer without the usual queue and noise.

then Santander, back in 2019. I was very impressed then, and

It was that post that made me study Google Maps & Streetview for my later
trip in 2019. I passed through the same national park on the way south from
Bilbao and then did some roads a bit further west on the way to Santander.
Largely taking as close to a straight line from a Finca in Rioja near
Logrono as possible. The roads were certainly not very straight or flat
once travelling NW from Modina de Pomar via Portilla de Lunada.

I was meant to be there last year, taking in a bit more of Asturias on the
way. One of my little hobbies is to drink a wine where it is made and I was
looking forward to looking out to the Atlantic in Galicia whilst sipping

I live in a catlick country. Everyone has to walk to Santiago some time
in their life. A bit like the muslims with Mecca, only on foot. People
boast about how far they walked (you can choose to walk from the next
village or from Australia, but as far as I know, it's largely a European
thing).

Ah. I do have a dim memory of this, but didn't remember that SdC was
the location.

If I'm not mistaken, there are some pilgrimage sites where you get
bonus points for crawling the entire distance, preferably on your
bloody hands and knees. Maybe this is one of them. Pretty sure
there's a site in Mexico like that.

when travelling by motorcycle across Asturias etc, the water troughs for
the pilgrims are very handy when it is 35C. Especially if it is a spring
with very cold water. Not for drinking but for cooling feet and pouring
over the merino wicking layer to induce evaporative cooling.

I don't think it gets to 35ºC up there very often. And it rains a lot. A
bit like Wales.

The official route for Brits doesn't go via Asturias. Straight into
