One for the FOAK.

I'm contemplating a trip to the Le Mans Classic next year and am
looking for recommendations for a route planner where I can plot a
route through France avoiding N & A roads and preferably steep hills.

As much as I enjoy winding the French up, a 97 yeard old SOC isn't that
fast and can get quite 'exciting' in traffic.

That was my first port of call - any idea how do you filter out road

You could try https://www.mapmyride.com/. Intended for cyclists, but
if you select 'Cycling - long distance' as your activoty and 'Avoid
Highways' it should be good for you. Also gives a graphic display of
climbs and descents, that may be more suitable for you.

Did you really mean to type 97 years old? As in, from 1924? Wottisit

It lets you filter out toll roads and motorways, under route options.

Alternatively, just have a look at a Michelin map.

I'm a bit confused over the fact you want to avoid National roads and
Autoroutes. Which leaves Departmental roads, if that is the case saying
no toll and no highway should suit you. As to hills, there aren't any
significant ones en-route to Le Mans (IMO).

www.kurviger.de has a lot of filters - designed with motorcycles in mind to

Why would you enjoy 'winding the French up' ?

Sounds a bit cuntish if I'm honest, especially given current nonsense going on.

Thanks for the suggestion - I think that is exactly the sort of thing
I'm looking for.

The car is a 1924 Alvis 12/40 built in the latter part of 1923

I’ve found that, with Waze and Google Maps, they don’t avoid N roads when
set to avoid motorways.

Interesting. A friend has a 1932 Alvis Firefly (is that the subsequent model to yours, but there's something terminal wrong with the engine block, and there simply aren't any replacements available - think he said there are only two left in North America, of which his is 50%. I saw it for the first time yesterday, and it looks terrific. Just needs an engine...

The same guy also has a 1960 Alvis TD21 drophead in beautiful dark blue with grey interior. I'm deeply, deeply in love with it.

Well no, and I'm surprised that anyone is recommending them, given the
clearly stated requirements, especially the desire to base the route
on steepness of hills.

Some people don't seem to be able to read beyond the first couple of
lines.

Does he belong to the Alvis register (not to be confused with the
owners club)? If not it may be worth joining as they have a very good
network and probably worth putting up a wanted ad in the monthly
bulletin.

https://www.alvisregister.co.uk/

For some reason the Register and the Owners club don't seem to rub
along well, the former being for pre-war cars and the latter for
post-war cars.

He might strike lucky with a block and I would have thought shipping
should be relatively straightforward.

This is mine at this years Kop Hill - looks OK from a distance!

I'd love a TD or TE21 in the light blue as used by Mr Fry in his detective
series

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HSb9NpuV15Q/T1GsFMTg7WI/AAAAAAAABCA/M5bdk8tUYdI/s1600/Alvis+TE21+with+Stephen+Fry.jpg

I guess it would be a TD if it was a 1962 model to match my age

Don't know. I'd have thought so, but I'll check. He also just bought a 1948 TA14 Drophead Coupe, which I haven't seen in person yet.

And a while ago, he was telling me about a plan to join some once-a-decade Alvis club run around Britain, for which he was going to have to ship the TD21 there and back! He's retired, and eccentric, and his 35 cars are his principal hobby.

Handsome. I'd quite like a pre-war car, but I find them quite intimidating - partly based on the care and feeding, but also because some of the controls are...unusual.

Well, I did note that there is nothing that stands out as a steep hill
en-route to Le Mans (IMO).

Oh dear.

If you want unusual, the Indian behind it has a left hand throttle,
foot clutch and hand gear change. Apparently it's ok once you get used
to it!

That's pretty much the case for obscure 30's motorcycles too.

The sought after models, but still around in significant numbers, have
surprising availability of parts that wear out. Anything else needs deep
pockets, unless you are a time served apprentice machinist with your own
lathe and access to a small scale foundry.

Amazing what can be done to resurrect a machine of sufficient historic
significance these days though.

There was a tiny loco in Wales that was rebuilt from a name plate, and
a brake lever.
