I've never heard anyone claim that Amsterdam or New York are the
capitals of the Netherlands or the United States respectively.

I haven't even heard the "financial capital" claim in respect of
Frankfurt (which has a reasonable claim to that recognition).

course the capital of the netherlands, and Germany, and France....

Australia has its little brussels called Canberra, but Sydney is no 1
town. Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro is no. one Brazilian town but the
capital is Brasilia. etc. etc..

There is a reasonable case to be made for regarding Brussels (however
spelled) as the capital of the EU.

From memory, so very, very approximate...

In 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin', one of the characters is a classicist
employed by the army in WWII as a translator for both Greek and Italian.
He, of course, knows ancient Greek and Latin. The Author deals with
this by translating his speech as stuff like, "Prithee Sire..." much to
the confusion of the locals.

This is where you're putting your own words in others' sentences or
"breaths". I suggest you start listening to others before making such
myopic claims.
