It's quite logical that the nose broke off, the engines hit the water
first pushing the nose down. It broke right on the leading edge, exactly
where you'd expect it to.

Should be easier/safer to ditch on a river that has an almost flat
surface, even a relatively calm sea can have waves and swells that could
upset a smooth water landing.

Even with the pilots doing a perfect job and with mild sea conditions
good luck is going to be a factor.
Both pilots survived and have been discharged from hospital so it looks
like they did get lucky.
