Hi,

the main Mascot N-S runway is being renovated, an area about 100m square at the North end. Near Tempe.

The decision is that jet planes cannot land across the works for four months - but they can take off across them. They are doing so now.

https://www.sydneyairport.com.au/corporate/planning-and-projects/runway-resurfacing

Wot if a BIG jet a has to abort a take off ?

Workmen scatter ?

...... Phil

<NOTAM snipped>

For those who don't read NOTAMs for relaxation...

RWY TORA TODA ASDA LDA
decodes as
Runway / Take Off Run Available / Take Off Distance Available / Accelerate Stop Distance Available / Landing Distance Available.

Back when Tullamarine airport was still under construction 2 of my
friends worked doing material testing for the Dept of Works as it was
called back then.
They were working at the end of the same runway when they got a call on
the radio to vacate the area because a heavily loaded aircraft (full of
racehorses) needed to use that runway to take off and there was some
doubt whether or not it was going to get off the ground.
The runway was still under construction and not yet at its full length
and there was a 6mtr drop at the end, the aircraft lifted off just a few
meters before the end of the runway and it sank as it went over the drop
almost striking its tail and it just cleared the boundary fence so I
don't think that the Emirates incident was the first time there was
almost a major crash in Melbourne.
