Any recommendations? Main needs are portable, and USB and battery power. Nice
extras would be strong signal capture, bluetooth and tapping into external
storage (USB/SD etc). it's for a camper van so size isn't too much of an
issue.

Noticed that the kitchen radio uses a 5V supply, so bought a USB-5V jack cable
for a quid off ebay. All done.

Are DAB portables still as heavy on batteries as once, or better now?

I'm not that sure. The Sony portable I'm using in this case cites similar run
times for FM and DAB - about 14 hours from 3 D cells, which anecdotally feels
about right. Hooked up to a 5000mAh/3.2V power bank it ran DAB the whole day -
16 hoursish - and still had some left.

So my guess would be 'better'.

I remember building a transistor portable in the 60s. AM only. But a fair
sized speaker so sounded not too bad for then. It used a PP9. Which lasted
about a year of heavy use. ;-)

Yes, I was thinking that. My parents got me Fidelity bandspread 208
am radio and that used a PP9, again the battery lasted months and
months.

And that was in the days of zinc batteries I'd guess. I've similar memories of
old FM radios. Unlike torches of the day.

Just a mild update/correction - I've just checked the manual (Sony XDR S60)
and DAB is 16 hours, FM 14 hours.

I recently used one of the cheap FM radio kits sold by CPC to make a
'portable radio'. Used with a small speaker it sounds surprisingly decent.
Runs from a half-dozen AA cells. No idea of the total life they will give
in hours-on but so far they've lasted a year in occasional use.
