I like camping, but having decent kit is essential and it took a while to work out
what works well for me, five things were key:
- sleeping support that keeps you off the ground, I use a camp bed that packs up small.
- good sleeping bag with separate liner.
- decent cooking equipment (trangria)
- decent chair to sit in.
- a tent that has a separate ground sheet and an 'inner' that can be taken down
(and packed!) independently from the fly sheet so you have a chance of not getting
the bit you're in touch with absolutely saturated during a days riding if you put it down
when it's wet.

Not found one small and light enough to travel with. We use Thermarests.

> - good sleeping bag with separate liner.

Again, size issues. The smallest/lightest are usually too hot for some
countries. We have often ended up carrying a sheet to join the
thermarests and a decent sleeping bag to put on top. A hime made double
bed :-)

Used them for years, but would have had trouble getting fuel in the
Americas, so switched to petrol and now also good old butane mix. (Not
found anywhere that has not been available.... yet). Really need a
JetBoil though :-)

All the above (IME) easier with a car. In which case we take the
Berlingo with the awning :-)

I've got a cot that's essentially a knock-off Thermarest, like a cross
between these two:
https://www.thermarest.com/ie/cots/cots

Very comfortable, packs down small and light. Think I paid about £40 for
it. Bargain.

Knock-off Helinox. About £15.

Cheapskate? Me? Rather.

If either of them eventually break, I'll probably spend the money on the
genuine article, but they'll do for now.

I've used the Thermarest 'luxurylite' cot. It's about the same size and weight as a thermarest.

Cotton liner is next to no size and good enough to sleep in when it's warm.
My feather summer-weight bag packs down to little more space than a large
can of beer.

Trangia also have a gas burner option that fits into the kettle (made by Primus
I think). Or petrol, if you want petrol it needs the separate pressurised container
to deliver petrol to the evaporator.

Helinox, or clone.

I wouldn't question it's easier with a car, but then it's about the destination rather than the
journey.

V
Weight (Metric) 0.35 kg 0.51 kg 0.69 kg

It all adds up.

However the packed dimensions are only 10cm, worth a ponder.

Got a link? I've tried a few small cheap chairs, they are not

I faintly remember camping at Snetterton once. No idea why. I think it
was Summer, but I ended up sleeping in the car because the ground was
hard and freezing cold.

Something just reminded me of this thread, a memory of a ski/snowboard
run down the "Galtiberg" route in Engelberg, me, Neal, his mate Iain
and a mad Russian skier alled Albert. There's one place on the run
where some mountain guides will rig up a rope for their group,
largely, I've always felt, to increase the clients' perception of how
extreme a run they've done.

We weren't having any of that crap, of course, and Albert mentioned to
Neal and Iain, who hadn't done the route before, that it was a
particularly awkward right-hand turn with a cliff just underneath it,
and I recalled that it had been said of that run that it wasn't
difficult except for that one turn where if you fell and slid you
would die.

Turns out that in fact you could fuck up the turn and survive. Neal
managed it OK on his toe edge, but Iain was on his heals and fluffed
it, sliding about half way to the cliff before managing to control it.

Didn't seem that bothered afterwards, on the basis, I guess, of "I
survived, so it obviously wasn't that dengerous".

Epic run, mind, one of many extreme off piste descents there.
