I've been going through some old stuff and I've found some videos recorded on
VCDs. Anyone remember them?

Is there any software which will allow me to read them and (ideally) get the
recordings into a modern format?

Video CDs?

If I remember rightly they were recorded as tracks on the CD. Normally an
audio CD has a number of tracks, one for each song, that you select with the
buttons on your player. A data CD typically has a single data track that
lasts the whole 'length' of the CD - 74 minutes traditionally. You could
also get CDs which had audio tracks followed by a data track - you could
still play them, but the player would give up on the last track.

Video CDs mix data, video and audio tracks. As such you need something to
grab them that understand about 'tracks', which is not something that
typical video players do. DVDs don't make use of this 'tracks' idea, being
a single data track like a data CD.

No idea what Mac software will handle them, but I'd look at 'CD ripping'
software that understands audio tracks, and maybe handles video tracks too.

I do! I used the make them of episodes of "Buffy" and send them to my niece
