Now I'm in my new home and got the control room wired up I though I'd
update my Mini M1 to Monterey.

12 GB +, and I get 30 Mb/s in the new place against 72 in the old.

It seems to have worked although I haven't been back to it since I left it
updating. What did Mac users do in the days of dial up?

Windows 10 is almost that, and approaches 20 GB when installed, with all
updates.
ISO downloads are smaller.

macOS Monterey (and Big Sur) downloads are so large because they have to
cater for both Intel and ‘Silicon’ architectures.
