Question as in title. SWMBO fears it may be another browser take-over.

autofill. that's not a registered domain. she must have made a typo at
some point, and it's in browser history.

I think she's cleared the history.

Anyway, autofill is just for web forms, isn't it?

that doesn't clear autofill.

that's a different autofill.

autocomplete is a better term.

1) OK, so where is the autocomplete suggestion list stored then?

2) Removing an entry from Prefs -> Autofill -> Other Forms doesn't help - I've
tried that for one of mine which autocompletes as before.

it's cached.

go to safari->develop menu (enable if needed, prefs/advanced) and
choose empty cache. you may need to find the actual cache file delete
it, which is at: /Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db. quit
safari first, delete, relaunch.

or just wait until the preferred url becomes a higher priority and it
autofills rather than the other one.

Maybe delete instances of the offending URL from Safari's history?

I assume you meant:

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

I already emptied the cache and just now quit Safari, deleted the cache.db
(seems to be an SQLite database), restarted it, but to no avail. My example
still autocompletes.

you said you deleted history. did it come back?

these are notoriously difficult to delete.

No, she deleted her history, although it may be that she didn't delete ALL her
history. When I tried it just now (Mojave), I deleted all history and my
example no longer completes. I may live to regret that, however; I would have
preferred to have been able to edit it to remove one item.

Hey ho.

too late now, but you can select the item(s) and tap delete. search for
matches to be sure you find all that you want gone.

Yeah, that works for me under Mojave but not for her under BS. Go figure.

Night chaps and thanks for humouring me :-)

Turns out that after clearing History, one has to Edit Bookmarks to clear any
shit out of there too. The advice also suggested turning off Load Top Hit in
the background, in Prefs -> Search.

It is more likely your ISP is intercepting DNS queries that return
NXDOMAIN (ie does not exist) or are "dodgy" in some way, and redirecting
you to its own site instead. Possibly in the name of things like "child
safety" but almost certainly as a way to show you some adverts.

Several ISPs do that. You should be able to disable that "value add"
feature.
