Incidentally, the reason why Cambridge North features is because it's
not only about 15 minutes shorter trip than Cambridge, but it's within
the Cambridge OHL section (which ends not much further north at Milton).

The implication of that timetable is they are running actual [shuttle]
trains between Downham Market and Kings Lynn, because that's within the
Kings Lynn OHL section (whereas Littleport is in the Milton/Ely one).

I don't know what work they are doing and where, but the collateral
damage is no diseasels between Norwich and Ely, Ely and Peterborough,
Ely and Bury (all of which could run if the only impediment was no OHL
power at Ely), in addition to the no EMUs between Milton and Downham
Market.

Good news is both GA and GN are running their London services through to
Cambridge North.

Bad news is PAX are having about an hour added to their journey. And XC
aren't running their Stansted services up to Cambridge North, nor
bustituting them Ely to Cambridge. But hey, who really needs to catch a
plane on a Sunday?

[The trip now being: XC train to Peterborough, XC bus to Ely, someone
else's bus to Cambridge North, someone else's train to Cambridge,
then an XC shuttle to Stansted]

Looking at the EAS it seems they are using this large-scale blockade to
do all sorts if different things, including tamping in places,
ultrasound, litter picking, S&R maintenance, plain line work, all sorts.
This includes doing something on the MNR - whether just the access
track or the whole thing, I can't tel.

They saw your posts on how a bus would be adequate for Luton Airport, so

Those are rather short bus rides compared with what the WCML has on
offer this (Easter) weekend:

Bus, London Euston to Milton Keynes (some taking 3 hours)
Train, Milton Keynes to Lancaster (diverted via Stoke on Trent)
Bus, Lancaster to Carlisle
Bus, Carlisle to Glasgow.
(About 7 hours from Milton Keynes to Glasgow)

London passengers can use the ECML via Edinburgh as an alternative, but
that does not apply if you are travelling from somewhere like Watford
Jn. and might be overcrowded if a lot of people want to travel between
London & Scotland.

I think the main problem is work on the Cambridge signal box upgrade/
digital signalling It will be a further problem on Easter Monday and for
several weeks to come. I believe next w/end the work will be on the
London side of Cambridge

The buses at airports are regular (station/hotel/car-park to terminal
and terminal to plane) and generally adequate, the list above are rail
replacement, and not.

Looks like the manual signalbox (and wooden gates) at Litteport not
being upgraded yet. Something you don't soften see on other than on
heritage railways, any more.

I think I did see something about re-signalling, but of course the box
itself is the London side of the station, and any work taking place
isn't stopping trains getting up to Cambridge North.

The Kings Cross line is also working OK for the first weekend I can
remember (well the first weekend I've looked recently, anyway).

So you would send trains 20 miles with no signalling, unable to change
points and no OHL power and men working on the track and no one to warn
them of approaching trains?

Which 20 miles are those?

The main thing I was suggesting was done differently on the tracks this
weekend is sending the XC trains as far as Cambridge North, and as GN/GA
are going that far anyway (and it's not 20 miles) your question doesn't
make sense.

In the longer term, it might help if they got more work done each
weekend and didn't have these closures going on for months on end.

All the ones from London!! But not the XC from Stansted (although I see
there's some XC buses direct to Peterborough there).

Presumably Cambridge North is a better place to marshall buses, having both
a big car park and direct access to the A10/A14. Meanwhile Cambridge
central is limited in access to the north and east.

I think the bridge north of Wymondham is still unusable, which must limit
what they can do? Unless NR are donating any parts?

That is in the EACE bundle.

I mentioned its better accessibility, earlier. Also less distance for
the average passenger to walk (assuming they even care about providing
that).

Let's hope they deliver that before the box falls down:

http://www.perry.co.uk/images/falling-down.jpg

But the manual box is actually an asset because the man inside will pop
out and let one or to vehicles across before closing the gates again,
whereas an automated full barrier would make everyone wait, and wait,
and wait.

That's especially important (for car drivers, anyway) now they've closed
the underpass.
