Just missed seeing a Network Rail track cleaning train earlier, it
pulled out of the station as I went past.

Good to see the Jacobite back in the station though.

Fort William some time around 15:30h (at a guess).

Just looked on their website and similar to the onese there with lots of
tanks.

I was leaving the car park and looking at it, wondering whether to get
my pocket camera out, when it drove off. Might be at the depot but
can't be bothered climbing the hill that overlooks it!

Ah yes, an effective cleaner but, like other substances such as
creosote, now banned in favour of more expensive and less effective
substances.

Oh yes, many a-time was spent with a cloth soaked in CCl4 rubbing the
track of my Tri-ang layout.

I shudder to think about that now... though my liver, kidneys, and
nervous system appear to have survived unscathed... along with lack of
any sign of cancers.

The local pharmacist happily provided me (starting as a pre-teen and
later) with large bottles no questions asked.

We were too far from a town with such suppliers but fortunately Mother
sometimes bought a product called Dabitoff ,possibly from a travelling
salesman which was a home dry cleaning product that was basically Carbon
Tetrachloride under a brand name which I pinched.
CC14 is bad enough when breathed in anyway but back in those days when many
smoked someone drawing on a cigarette near to where a garment was being
cleaned was usually unaware that the CC14 upon passing the flame produced
phosgene gas which is not the best thing to have enter ones lungs so it
was later banned in such products.

The distance to the nearest stockist also affected obtaining “smoke fluid”
which was annoying
but that was solved when I found dropping diesel into the Seuthe smoke
generator produced a fug in the room worthy of a Dee-Jay who has just
bought a fog machine.
And with a 100 gallons in store for the tractor a few drops went unnoticed.

My first thought was a "Railvac"
https://www.railcare.se/en/we-offer/machines-and-technology/railvac/

but the mention of "tanks" took me in the direction of

Way back in the late 60s, I was on a training placement at
Eggborough power station. On one occasion I was pointed towards
the three enormous power terminals in the bottom of the now empty
stator casing, which were still covered in remains of the old
jointing compound and needed to be prepared for the new stator
connections. I was simply given a bundle of rags and a can of
trike and left to it. I wondered why I was getting a little
light-headed.
