I wonder how well it would be doing without the Harry Potter connection?

That's not what that report says.

The report seems to be about the number of people coming to watch it go
past, not those actually travelling on it.

First time I went to Glenfinnan was 1989 and there were 3 people
watching the train go past, myself, my wife and my son! However when we
got to Mallaig the train was obviously full. Couldn't get near either
chippy!

On my last Jacobite ride, most of the passengers seemed to be excited
foreign Potter fans, who had no idea how Mk 1 carriage seats are numbered,
and understood little English (so it was hard to explain that they were
sitting in our reserved seats). And the steward seemed mainly to want to
talk about our carriage's role in the films.

I've been there with an audience of one several times.

In spite of what the journalist thinks I would suggest the success of
the Jacobite is the number of fare paying passengers travelling rather
than the non-fare paying spectators.

Agreed but that doesn't address the previous profitability of the
service to its then operators. The answer to the question "How well
would it do without the Harry Potter connection is probably Very well.

Be interesting to see how many of the spectators become fare paying

Most Brits who want to go on it already have. How many time would they pay repeat visits? For example, when did you
last travel on it?

People who just want to experience a steam railway have many other options around the UK that are generally much easier
to get to.

That may be 100% accurate, but tells me nothing!

I was going to visit the National Trust place in Glenfinnan this
morning. Despite the new large car park, at 10:30 there was nowhere to
park. Car parks full, lay-bys full, station car park full.

The road past the NTS place has been made a Clearway and signs warning
against parking on verges.

There seemed to be people walking in from lay-bys some distance away.
