Any recommendations for off-road training days, preferably within a
couple of hours of Newcastle, or somewhere in Kent?

(Asking for a friend. No, really.)

I can only recommend the one that Jean did, but that was in Wales.

I learnt the "as I went along" method, riding with someone more
experienced helped.

I learned the "falling of lots of times and continually trying to do
bigger jumps" method, riding an SL125, then an XT500 aged 17 helped.

Happy days, jumpers for goalposts.

Anyone know if the green lane over the Chevin from Milford (Belper,
Derby) to the Bluebell Inn is still usable for motorbikes? My
favourite hunting ground, was that. Looks like they've built a golf
course there now, so I doubt it.

I think this approach works well when you're at an age where you're 17
and still made from rubber and magic.

Not sure I'd want to rely upon it now

Bing maps has an OS layer which will show if it is, subject to any

When I walked over there last year it was a restricted byway - so I
think that means 'No' to your question :-/

As posted elsewhere, I have been walking the Derbyshire Portway with my
son and I took this photo on day 3.

Well, don't go around doing jumps, less falling off then :-)

I'm very happy to recommend The Yamaha Off-Road Experience, run by
enduro gods Geraint and Dylan Jones. Had 2 or 3 days (I unremember
which) with them about 10 years ago, and loved it. ISTR it was what
prompted Steve P to actually go and buy an off-road bike

https://www.yamaha-offroad-experience.co.uk/

Unforunately, they are about as far from Newcastle and Kent as you can
get and still be in the UK. But they do list accomodation options on
their website

I think Niall Rowan did that one recently and was rather impressed.
ISTR a mini-report on FB (not sure if it was on the UKRM page or his

there's a thread on UKGSer asking for places near London or Peak District
www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/547538-Off-road-course-near-SW-London

https://desertrose.academy/ are in E Sussex
https://www.offthekerbtrailriding.com/trail-riding/ Dorking, Surrey
https://adysmith.co.uk/ runs KTM events in various locations but none
scheduled in the preferred areas

from a different thread at that forum
https://www.freestyletraining.net/enduro-training-days/ E Sussex

You should be able to see that part of UKGSer as I do not think it is
behind the paywall.

Ian White did a bit with Mick. I'm not sure he looks in here now.
But, yes; Mick and the Yamaha school are in Wales.
I suggest giving the TRF a shout:

Me too

I was in Wales, but not nearly as far west and remote as the
Thomas/Yamaha set up.

We had a good day with Mick, but it wasn't as professionally set-up
and organised as the Thomases. Not bad, but I would say the Yamaha
experience is the gold standard (in my limited experience)

We took the lad to Wheeldon Off Road Centre in Devon back when he was
progressing from a KX65 to a YZ85. That was indoor though. Very well
organised. They do out door training as well. Rather far away for the OP
granted, but at least then they had on site accommodation.

They sorted out his clutch control and let him have a go on a bike with
bigger wheels than the 65. Only a Honda 100 four stroke though so not
much quicker. He was going very well by the end of the day. I reckon he
would have been really quick on a 4T 150 (no 2T 85s) but may have
struggled starting one.

His early promise was fulfilled when he got a Large Wheel YZ85 - but on
tarmac against the clock. He never liked the 'traffic' when I took him
to a local MX practice track a few times.

So I asked around a bit.

It would seem that Wales is where it's at.
Make it a weekend and stay somewhere.

From my experience I'd say its a toss up between Mick Extance and
Geriant Jones. The Jones have been at it for a long time and they do
have a good set up.

A friend of mine does some work for these guys in the Peaks.

This is a lot closer and across 100 acres of some wonderful countryside. Cracking route to ride there through North Pennines/Dales/Forest of Bowland.

https://experience.inchperfecttrials.co.uk

Of particular interest right now, they have a line-up of electric trials bikes. Everyone who isn't a crumbly should try a 'leccy.
