I'm sorting out computer woes for an elderly relative. She's finding emails
take between 20 minutes and 2 hours to arrive. (She thought this was normal.)
Has anyone else come across this, and can someone suggest a remedy?

She's using OS 10.9.5 (the newest which will run on her machine) and the
account information gives:

Account Type: Yahoo! IMAP
Incoming Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

It's not the internet connection itself - I set up an iCloud account for her
and that works as expected, but she naturally doesn't want to tell her
friends to start using a new email address.

Any thoughts?

email is usually fast but sometimes it's not.

start by looking at the full headers to see its path from sender to
recipient with time stamps to determine where the delay actually is.

do you know anyone else using the same email provider and are they
having similar problems?

is there a status page that mentions any issues and expected resolution?

If it's a Yahoo email account, I thought the incoming server would be
imap.mail.yahoo.com port 993 for tls/ssl.

Or is it BT email account, in which mail.btinternet.com, even for IMAP.
