He once got a photo used on the cover of Radio Times. They phoned him.
'About the fee, will £500 be OK?' Of course, it was.

Happy to pay that fee to "increase his profile"?

When he was active he was probably the best paid railway photographer
as all the magazines were happy to use his photos.

The in-joke there was a story about the BBC back in the day who
approached a professor and he agreed to give a broadcast talk on
some erudite subject. The BBC confirmed the engagement and said
"the fee will be £100" (or whatever). So he sent them a cheque.

What's not so much a joke is conferences who refuse to pay visiting
speakers any fee or expenses, on the grounds that their appearance will
be "raising their profile", presumably to be invited to speak at even
more conferences for free.

ObAutobiography: My organisation was the first to pay Radio Times to
mount a cover disc for an online service. Such cover discs back then
were a win-win-win. The magazine got extra revenue for doing it, the
"advertiser" got good value-for-money distribution, and the punters
got some free software.
