Has everyone gone on holiday or something? I’ve not seen much on here in
the last few days - unless Switzerland stops posts at the border….

It's warm (88 in my kitchen according to the "old money" thermostat).

Did you see my FS videos - what do you think? The start of the first one
has the not-actually-a-387 in the lefthand margin.

Not sure why the auto-focus got temporarily confused when I zoomed back,
and the second video sadly focussed on the dirty window, not the passing
train.

A few more trips and I might work out which of several hundred buttons
to press to fix things like that. "Set it to auto" is clearly an
over-simplification.

There are probably only about 10 regular thread starters so if none of them
have anything new railway related then there isn’t much to talk about, and
off topic posts interest some and rankle others,
though sometimes they can have a tenacious connection , eg one of my mates
bought me a pint this week and announced that it was funded by some work he
was doing in connection with Serco giving up the Scottish sleepers.
I would’t normally have bothered mentioning something like that but see a
thread on the change of
operator has been mentioned.

I did, my first though was it was getting around a bit because I happened
to see it pass through Salisbury a day or two before, Wednesday I think.

I’m sorry, I just have missed the link to your videos - can you perhaps
repost?
It’s notable here out in tourist Switzerland that any form of camera other
than a phone is more or less extinct. The other notable thing is almost
nobody is fat.

Here's a train spotter, I spotted earlier (no doubt his video is on
social media somewhere):

http://www.perry.co.uk/images/trainspotter.jpg

Phone cameras have broadly speaking the same resolution as a mid-range
"digital SLR". But the latter has exchangeable lenses (including optical
zoom), stabilisation, and better low-light performance. There's also
enough options to tweak to fill a 150 page manual.

For sure

> "digital SLR".

Not really. Apart from the fact that DSLRs are almost extinct, mirrorless
camera sensors have crop factors between 1 and 2, with sensor areas ranging
from about 225 to 864 mm^2. A good compact camera will have about 116
mm^2. In contrast, even the best main phone cameras have sensor sizes below
25 mm^2 (the telephoto and ultra-wide lens camera sensors will be much
smaller).

In terms of resolution, most main phone cameras have 12-16 mp, but these
are tiny pixels. A full frame mirrorless will probably have 24-60mp, and
even the 60mp sensors have far larger pixels than a 12mp phone camera (at
least seven times the area).

>But the latter has exchangeable lenses (including optical zoom),

Most decent phones have wide, ultra-wide and telephoto lenses. Top-end
phones might have two different telephoto lenses. Even my cheap phone has
three physical cameras on the back.

>stabilisation,

So do good phone cameras

> and better low-light performance.

Yes, that's the big difference. Phones have to compensate for their tiny
camera sensors using computational photography. That works well some of the
time, but the images often don't look good close-up. So they're s fine when
viewed on a phone, OK on a tablet or laptop, but so-so on a large monitor.

Separate cameras also have viewfinders (essential in bright light), flip
screens, large removable memory cards and batteries, lots of convenient
physical controls and may be ruggedised.

> There's also enough options to tweak to fill a 150 page manual.

Is that all languages, or just English?

But, in any case, that sounds like a very simple, entry-level camera.

This is the 669 page, English-only manual for my full-frame mirrorless
camera:
https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1710/v1/en/print.pdf

And that's only one of the six cameras I use regularly!

A few years ago there was a group of transpotters photographing the
Jacobite at Corpach. One had two quite serious SLRs, one mounted on top
of the other! Not sure if he could control them together or just quickly
switch from one to the other.

I very rarely use the camera on my phone - think single figures! Just
too fiddly and difficult to see what you are doing.

Is that a high intensity headlight fitted to the front of FS in the centre?

Nikon have five DSLRs listed on their website, one of them costing
nearly £7,000, which they wouldn't be doing if DSLRs were 'almost
extinct.'

Not sure what point you are trying to make about mirrorless sensors.
In the same company's mirrorless range the sensor is the same 35.9 x
23.9mm size used in its DSLR cameras but in conjunction with the
larger Z mount RAW files are about 30Mb, jpgs upto 20Mb.

I agree. I would be more than happy to have a phone with just one
selfie camera for Zoom or messenger and leave it at that.

When were the most recent of those dying breed models first released? They
may still be listed, but they're long obsolete. Yes, there are still people
who haven't yet made the switch (which I made 13 years ago), and they might
still be buying replacement bodies.

That's not how you measure resolution (it's the equivalent of measuring
loco power in tonnes), but that must be a pretty low res FF camera? Maybe
32mp?

Yes, mirrorless APS-C and FF cameras use the same physical size sensors as
their DSLR forebears. But, being more modern, some of them have higher
pixel counts, which is what we are talking about.

Measuring raw file resolution in MB is meaningless, but if that's your
preferred measure, Sony A7RV uncompressed raw files are 133.7MB, lossless
compressed raw files are about 83MB and extra fine JPEGs around 50MB. But
the statistic that matters is the 60mp resolution.

With exactly the same physical sensor size, the A7C only has 12 million
(much larger) pixels, and the image files are accordingly much smaller. The
resolution may be the same as a typical phone camera, but the dynamic range
is far wider.

One thing I noticed at the recent East Lancashire Railway small engines
gala was that - on average, people using camera phones took a lot longer
to frame and focus their photos than people using DSLRs or other
"conventional" cameras.

Yes, that's a good point. The human factors are much worse with phone
cameras (no viewfinder, no dedicated shutter button, no zoom ring, no
physical dials), and it does noticeably slow down the photography.

At least ,unless I have been lucky the phenomenon of using an i pad or
similar tablet
to take photos seems to have been a short lived fad.
Such people were a nuisance as they held their devices aloft blocking the
view of others.
I got a questioning glare while at the Chelsea Flower Show a few years
back when having my view blocked for minutes by someone I resorted to
taking a picture of their screen over their shoulder with my small digital
camera. The picture was lousy but I the perpetuator took the hint and
uttered an apologetic sorry to those behind her.
