The nice thing is that the rack and funicular railways are included in the inexpensive zone 1 public transport rover,
along with trams and buses. They both connect to U-Bahn lines. The vintage tram isn't included, nor the rather nice park
railway (which mainly runs diesels).

PS: A warning about the very late-running, over-budget Stuttgart 21 project. The main railway station is still a
building site, and just getting between the mainline platforms and the U-Bahn is a bit of a complicated route march.

Right, if somebody is planning to put a major train terminus
underground, they should at least not penny-pinch when building.

The future will tell whether an 8-track tunnel station is a capacity
equivalent of a 16-track terminus or not.

The future will tell on the effect a 15/1000 gradient has on the running
of a major station (trains may not commence or terminate because it's
impossible to do a brake test).

Hopefully, we'll never find out whether the 'reduced size' of fire
escape routes in the tunnels live up to a major problem or not.

Luckily, Frankfurt will go the Zurich way by adding a few underground
mainline platforms to the terminus rather than relocating everything
under ground, turning the whole city into a building site for 15 years.

Rolf
