We discussed at length the filming of quarry diving steam loco sequence, so
I was surprised no-one has mentioned the film now it's on release.
Obviously you don't go to watch that film for the plot or character
development, but the stunts and specific effects are pretty spectacular.

None of the plot is set in the UK, but I think it was made here, with most
of the studio scenes shot here. Quite a few of the actors (particularly the
actresses) are British. I believe New Street station features, masquerading
as an airport terminal, though i failed to spot it.

The rail sequence is quite lengthy, and is supposed to take place in the
steam-hauled Orient Express travelling through the Austrian Alps (on a
long, non-electrified single track line fitted with modern signalling on
gantries low over the train, which is a minor impediment to the chases and
fights on the train roof). As we know, it was actually shot in Norway,
apart from the bit in the Peak District quarry.

Tom Cruise certainly found a novel way to board a fast moving train
he'd missed! His way of leaving it was similar, and equally novel. I
suppose it's one way of avoiding gate lines…

The producers had to build a number of full-size replica Orient Express
carriages as well as the steam loco, so it was quite an investment.

It must be one of the longest-ever movie train crash sequences (and not
because of any slo-mo). I can't think of any other rail crash sequence in
which a grand piano plays a starring role!
