Last Saturday I was on 1V60 for just a short part of its journey from
Dundee to Plymouth. There was engineering so it was diverted via
Newport. Are there any other trains that serve England, Scotland and
Wales?

I can't think of any normal service trains that are scheduled to take such a route. Of course, the annual RTC GB rail
tour always visits Scotland Wales, and in some years, the train might pass through both Scotland and Wales in one day.

In the late 80s there was at least one train per day which ran Swansea to
Edinburgh, early morning, and mid afternoon return.

My birthday is late March, and one year we went away for a long weekend in
York, as a train and history buff it's a fairly natural destination...

I was very disappointed when an HST rolled in, had been hoping for something
exotic!

It was the first time I'd seen a phone on a train and I rang my grandmother.

On the way back, my father had to evict a couple of rugby fans from our
reserved seats - was a 5 nations weekend...

The annual "Three Peaks By Rail" [1] railtour takes in all three countries
but over the course of two days.

[1] they allow an extra 12 hours compared to visiting the peaks by road; 36
hours to visit all three rather than 24.

Some reverse at Severn Tunnel Junction so they'll (just) run through Wales,
but not call there.

What about in the past? I'd have thought there were services such as
Stranraer - Cardiff or Holyhead - Glasgow/Edinburgh.

I can see some traces of services which might have once been a
Holyhead-Crewe service joining with a London-Glasgow sleeper.

The last regular one I remember was a CrossCountry where the last train
of a regular Edinburgh-West country service couldn't get far beyond
Bristol before the railway shut for the night, so reversed to Cardiff
to provide a token service arriving at 23xx. It left about 0600 to
reverse at Bristol and form the first service to Edinburgh which would
otherwise have left its usual start point (Plymouth?) at a silly hour.
I seem to recall there was a political clause in Virgin's franchise
requiring some sort of service from Scotland to Wales.

Wikipedia says services west of Cardiff were withdrawn in summer 2003
and services to Cardiff had gone by 2007, so presumably this particular
Cardiff service disappeared between those dates.

There was a more regular Cardiff service before 2007 as you say; the one
per day which you mention ran from then until the timetable reductions for
Covid. I didn't mention it earlier in the thread because I couldn't
remember where the northern terminus of either morning or evening run was.

There is no particular 'usual' start point for XC in the south west,
particularly at beginning and end of service; Bristol, Plymouth, Paignton
and Penzance all see terminating services (and previously Exeter);
similarly the northern extremities of XC services from the south west
include Edinburgh, Manchester, Derby, Leeds, York, Newcastle, Glasgow,
Aberdeen, and Birmingham.

The most bizarre XC destination I've seen in Devon was Ivybridge when
the bridge in Laira was partially demolished by a vehicle.
