Amen to that. I've only read a few of his articles over the years and
I agree with you.

I think the problems come when people try to pin labels like
libertarian on him - something you (carefully?) did not do. Labels
like left-wing, right-wing, libertarian etc always seem to suggest
extremes whilst I think of O'Rourke as having occupied a place in the
same centre ground where I like to think that I belong - a slightly
different place to mine, though close enough to enjoy what he used to
say.

Those labels (understandably) reflect American attitudes, values and
divisions.
