I've just booked a ticket for tomorrow for Lockerbie to Motherwell via
Trainline. (the same journey was also tried via Northern with the same
result)
As I have a bike with me, I ticked that option (compulsory booking on
the Northern train), when doing that, I lost the option to have the
tickets on my phone, I had to collect them from the station. [1]

On removing the bike booking, it went back to tickets available for
phone use.
Strange, why is that?

[1] It came up with a message, 'Tickets can be collected from another
station, as Lockerbie does not have a machine'. Which would be fine if
you were near another station!
As it happens, Lockerbie has a ticket office, so they could be collected
there presumably, or, hopefully!
What would happen if it was another station with no ticket office or
machine, such as our other local station, Annan?

I don’t know if this could be the reason, but you are generally supposed to
have a printed ticket for the cycle reservation which you attach to the
bike. Perhaps, quite reasonably, they don’t expect the bike to have a
phone.

I've used https://trainsplit.com/ several times this year and have
been puzzled as to why some journeys have been on e-tickets, even with
multiple tickets, and others have required as many as ten printed
tickets for the return journey.

I asked at both the station, and the on train ticket check today,
neither knew why they couldnt be an e-ticket.
Typical TPX, the 9.33 was cancelled, the 10.29 was 10 late, but, I got
to my destination (Hamilton) 59.5 minutes late, so I'll probably only
get a 50% refund. Still, half price isnt bad.

The Station Staff actually tried to arrange taxis for the 8 people
waiting for the 09.33, but the taxis would have arrived later than the
10.29 dparture, so they said just wait for the next train.

If the trip involves a cross-London interchange, then it's because the
TfL gates don't recognise National Rail e-tickets.

Lockerbie to Motherwell via London? Where’s Clive Feather when you need
him?

I did wonder about that but it doesn't explain printed tickets for
recent excursions from Leicester to Saltaire, Saltburn and Aviemore.

ScotRail don't do e tickets, ie presented as a pdf or wallet format; they
do m-tickets, ie contained only within the Scotrail app. You can, however,
buy tickets online from other platforms, and 'collect' them within the
ScotRail app; I don't know whether this applies to all ticket selling
platforms or just some of them.

Strictly speaking they don't provide taxis at Cardiff Central railway
station but private hire vehicles. You have to wait for the private
hire vehicles even if taxi's are available in the rank.

The procedure for obtain a "taxi" at Cardiff Central railway station is
excruciating. Only the duty station manager seems to be authorised to
make the arrangements and they are the most elusive person you'll
encounter.

TfW does do e tickets which can be downloaded on their mobile app which
bypasses the excruciating processes of activating m tickets.

That paragraph is an illustration of how fucked up the UK train
ticketing system is. I've got a little bit of a clue, how are people who
are only occasional users meant to find these things out?

I 'found out' because when I went to buy a ticket online, the options
offered (through a non-ScotRail website) were "collect at station" (not
possible as I was extending a journey already in progress) or "collect
m-ticket via ScotRail app using the same collection code".

In the end I bought the ticket directly through the ScotRail app and the
ticket is presented (and activated, etc.) within the app, with no option to
download or add to wallet.

Ten coupons to get from Lockerbie to Motherwell. That does sound a bit
excessive. Perhaps if you were a bit less vague about the trips you
comment on, we could give more targeted answers.

My record intra-UK is seven for Cogan to Clacton-on-sea via Birmingham,
Oakham, and Ely. Five for Cogan to Birmingham is normal.

You'll be proud of me. I'm changing at Cambridge Noth next month on an
advance ticket between Cogan and Brandon! Since it's via London I have
to have a paper ticket.

“I've just booked a ticket for tomorrow for Lockerbie to Motherwell…”

Of course it's vague. It doesn't say if *that* is the trip with ten
coupons.

I'll take that as a "No, the Lockerbie to Mothjerwell trip wasn't the
one with ten coupons". Take a deep breath, and then tell us what was.

My record is a trip from Nottingham to Plymouth on AP tickets, where
there were separate reservation coupons for Nottingham-Leicester,
Leicester-Birmingham, Birmingham-Reading and Reading-Plymouth. And three
of us travelling. It cost buttons too (about a tenner) presumably
because no-one else had used up the cheapest quota rung for that rather
indirect routing.

The latter is to be expected. And one of the possibly unintended
benefits of Cambridge North is it's far easier to change trains than at
Cambridge (where recently the lifts servicing the island platform were
broken for far too long).

No me, pal. Though I do have a friend who once had 16 coupons for a trip
down the WCML to somewhere - he recounts people swapping seats at various
places.
