You can do this yourself at home with the following items:

Trail cam: $30 - $50

Sound relay with adjustable sensitivity. $8

32 GB TF card: $8

Cell phone telephoto: $6

DC to DC converter: $1.50

Other items: soldering iron, cold weld epoxy, stranded thin flexible wires and connectors and shrink wrap.

Procedure:

Trail cam circuit boards are mounted with small screws but the camera will still work when you take it apart. Just leave the batteries and wires in place.

Trigger the camera while measuring voltage on each of the four pins of the motion or pyro sensor. (Wave your hand in front of the sensor.) One pin should briefly put out about 3.3 volts. Note that pin's location.

Desolder the pyro crystal and remove it.

Set the output voltage of the converter to 3.3 volts. This does not need to be exact as the camera may trigger anywhere between 2.7 v to 3.5 v.

Wire the output of the relay to the input of the DC converter and solder the output of the converter to where the 3.3 volt pyro crystal pin was located.

All you need to video is the tag and some of the rear of the vehicle. Narrow the field of view of the camera with a cell phone telephoto. Cold weld the threaded mounting clip of the telephoto to the camera lens.

With the camera off use a laser pointer to precisely target the middle of the lane at tag level. The reflection from the laser will flash brilliantly from the telephoto when you are in the field of view.

If you get too many clips/week reduce the sensitivity of the sound relay. This will save GB on hard drive storage.

Other tips

As with all trail cams format the TF card each time you set it up.

Just use video clips. Still photos are useless.

If coming off another power source like a car battery preset the time on the card then plug in the power and trigger at that preset time to activate the camera.

Every few days make a loud enough noise to trigger a clip and note the time. This is to confirm the time stamp is correct.

Better trail cams turn on in < 1 second. Cheap ones take 3 - 5 seconds.

Trail cams are water proof but having extra wires coming out will require additional waterproofing.
