Is it a good idea to keep a battery powered car charger like this in the
glovebox?

https://www.binglee.com.au/products/laser-pb-cj6000-6000mah-emergency-power-bank

I remember this was discussed before and I think Sylvia said that the
battery of the charger would lose its power before you ever had to use it?

Is this true? Are they a waste of time?

Can anyone comment on this type of charger? Doesn't look it has a
battery at all.

Lithium-ion batteries keep their charge for a long time. They also don't
tolerate heat very well and can become unstable - which can lead to a
catastrophic uncontrollable fire. Temperatures in a car can get very hot
in summer in some parts of Australia so I'm not sure keeping those
batteries with such a high energy density in the car is a good idea. I
wouldn't.

What I was probably referring to was the fact that Lithium Ion batteries
lose their capacity to hold charge even if they're not being used.
Clocky's observation about the temperature in cars certainly factors
into that, because this loss of capacity is accelerated by high
temperatures.

So even if the capacity is 6000mAh when you buy it, it will not be that
by the time you need to use it. Note that this is a separate issue from
remembering to top up its charge due to self-discharge.

As an aside, the spec for this on the Laser web site

https://www.laserco.com.au/PB-CJ6000-6000mah-emergency-power-with-clippers-for-car-battery

gives something called "Watt Rating" of 21.6Wh. For a nominal 12V
output, that's only 1800mAh. The 6000mAh no doubt refers to the capacity
of the Lithium Ion cell, at its nominal 3.7V output. This is highly
misleading, to the point of being misrepresentation.

Add in the fact that batteries don't go flat on a whim. If you're in the
habit of leaving lights on for extended periods, you'd be better
installing a system to warn you about that.

I've only been stranded twice in a couple of decades, and one of those
occasions was when the battery developed some fault where it was
completely incapable of holding any charge (having been fine a couple of
hours earlier). The Laser device under discussion would not have helped
there.

Sylvia.

The reason I want it is because my car is in an underground carpark
where there is no power point nearby.

Otherwise, I would just buy a traditional charger that plugs into a
powerpoint.

There are many factors at play. Your battery could be at a level just a
bit below what is required to start the car, and adding some extra
charge could be all that's needed to tip the balance.

But I would take a lot of convincing that this device is a practical
solution to flat batteries.

How often do you see this happening? One of those wheeled luggage
carriers can be used to move the battery to somewhere it can be charged
(always disconnect the ground lead first).

If you're finding that the battery is frequently flat, you either need a
new battery, or you have some other electrical issue in the car, perhaps
an alternator fault, or something that's drawing significant current all
the time.

Sylvia.

What ampage would be necessary to start an engine if the battery is flat?

This product from Bunnings says it has 400A peak current. Would this be
sufficient?

It would just be if I leave the interior light or the head/parking
lights on.

At the back of my mind also is that I might not drive for a few weeks,
or go away for a few months, and the battery might be drained by the
immobiliser.

I have 2 of those power pack jump starters, bought the second one after
I accidentally left the first one connected to the battery for too long
after the engine started and the cells overheated and swelled, thought
it was ruined but after it cooled down it still works.
I've used them lots of time to start cars with flat batteries, unless
the car battery is completed dead then the jump starter pack will
normally get the engine started.
I agree that they aren't successful 100% of the time but they are still
very useful devices, still held a charge good enough to start a car
after being left in the car boot for 12mths untouched.

Could also be that the car isn't being used very often, if that's the
case I would buy a charger that can be permanently connected, mount the
charge under the bonnet with permanent connections to the battery, when
the car is parked just plug it into 240volts then just unplug when you
need the car.
I used the same system to keep my boat batteries charged.

**It uses a honkin' big capacitor. Mine came from Aldi. About $60.00, as
I recall. Works well. Well, it worked well, the first and only time I've
used it. As long as the battery is not completely dead (and most
aren't), it scavenges enough power to start the engine.

For $60 its worth keeping in the car just in case, if it doesn't work
you are no worse off.
I prefer the battery pack because it has other uses besides jump
starting cars, you can use it to charge a phone or a laptop if you have
no access to power plus they usually have a built in torch.

**Li-Ion batteries can deliver a huge amount of energy for a short time.
Although the battery may be rated for 6 Amp/hr, it can likely deliver
enough juice to crank the engine a couple of times. Be aware that those
devices are usually rated for specific engine sizes. Petrol and Diesel
engines have different requirements.

lead acid battery so no lithium battery issues

*Don't* use it and get rid of it!

**Lead acid batteries are hopeless for such a task. They suffer
significant problems, including:

* Mass. Lead acid are MUCH heavier.
* Size. Lead acid are much larger.
* Longevity. The lead acid batteries used are cheap, gel-cell types.
They have an officially rated life of 2 years. Li-Ion batteries last
MUCH longer.
* Charge issues. Lead acid batteries cannot be allowed to fall below a
specific level.

I've owned several lead acid battery types. All were hopeless.

It's all sounding too difficult. I think I will forget about buying
anything and just make sure I don't leave any lights on in the car.

Depends on the batterys rated discharge rate usually referred to as C.
If for instance the battery has a capacity of 6000mAH and C = 1, the
battery can give 6 amps for one hour, if C = 10 then it can give 60 amps
for 6 minutes. Many LiPo cells have a C of up to 70 so a 6000mAH cell
could give 320 amps for about 50 seconds (and it would get quite hot). A
starter pack would likely have 4 cells in series @3.7volts per cell
giving a bit over 14volts (probably a bit less under that sort of load).

Not this one perhaps, but there are some very, very good ones out there.
I have one of these:

It will start anything, whether it has a battery in it or not.
