A total of 390 million journeys were made by rail passengers in Great
Britain in the latest quarter (1 April to 30 June 2023). This is a 19%
increase on the 328 million journeys in the same quarter in the previous
year (1 April to 30 June 2022). There were 1,447 million journeys in the
year to 30 June 2023. This is a 5% increase on the 1,385 million journeys
made in the previous 12 months (April 2022 to March 2023).

In the quarter, ScotRail had the fastest growth, year-on-year, at 33%, and
it now has more journeys than GA. All the public sector operators grew, and
there was only operator (HEx) with a significant fall (6%), and we all know
why that was.

Yes, but unfortunately for the Treasury, average fares are lower, as
discounted leisure travel has replaced a lot of the former premium-priced
business travel. So rail revenue recovery is slower than ridership
recovery.
