What lube should (can?) I use on a manual focus camera lens - plastic
helicoid. Specifically a Nikon series E and Nikkor AI. I also have
some Carl Zeiss that are a bit sticky (which have metal helicoids, I
think).

I've seen optical greases at quite astonishing prices but they seem to
be just silicone grease. I have several tubes of that in the garage...

I'm fairly sure there are enough materials specialists here who know
this sort of thing.

I don't think any of my cameras (Nikon or otherwise) use a
grease/lubricant. They are all just made to close tolerances that don't
need any. If anything, I'd just suggest cleaning them thoroughly.

This is absolutely not a wind-up, but I seem to remember reading not
that long ago, that human grease, from one's nose, used to be the
go-to for lens mechanisms.

Make of that what you will...

I think it is from the *outside* of the nose that is used.
Anything from the inside is 'less recommended'.

Er, yes- I thought that should have been obvious.

Also can be used to lubricate the ferrules on fishing rods, fill
scratches on photographic negatives, the uses are endless[1].

[1] Rubbing your finger on your nose then touching the head on a beer
will collapse the foam.
