If you just wait a few weeks you might even be proved correct. If Vlad
the Invader starts pushing west as well as south we could have the
Danes paddling their nice shiny longboats up the Humber in no time.

And in a little, tiny swervette, my favourite comedy of the moment is
Conversations From A Long Marriage which has started its third series
this week.

Plot recycling?

Compare this week's birthday storyline of CFALM with this week's
episode of Second Thoughts over on BBC Radio 4 Extra. And while you
are at it, the repartee between the couples has an old familiar ring.

Me too. I've only been listening for about thirty years, on and off. Can any
long-standing correspondents report any previous mentions of boats on the
Am? I didn't get the impression it was that big a river. Did Rex mention how
he got the boat there?

He mentioned he had brought it down that morning (I think he said, from the
boat-yard).

Seems reasonable, since Jan Etherington wrote both - Second Thoughts, with
help from her husband Gavin Petrie (WHTH?). I probably watched the tv
version but have no recollection of it.

I too like CFALM, I'm happy to listen to Roger Allam in anything (not
quite so keen on JL.

No, not even a rowboat or the sort of thing one might fish from. Surely
in all those decades, if it's big enough for narrowboats, we'd have had

I've heard a couple of episodes, and liked them - gentle pace, _not_
(trying [and failing of course!] for) a laugh-a-minute for once. And
nice that JL's character has an Indian background, as she does in RL.

Cant say I know Roger Allam from anything, but I found him fine in it;
JL I actually enjoy - I think now more so on the radio, less
in-your-face than some of her more recent TV activities (though that
could be just this particular series/script).

The river doesn't look too insignificant in this, well-known picture:

https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/03/27/article-2299731-05A5639A0000044D-561_634x487.jpg

Mind you, narrowboats are really intended for canals. There are other
types of river boat that would be far more suitable on the Am.

Apart from CFALM he most notably played Douglas Richardson in Radio
4's Cabin Fever and has been in lots of other radio things. For people
with television sets there's oodles of TV work that they might have
seen him in. Wikipedia has an impressive list, starting with a
substantial amount of live theatre work here:

Well quite.
If the environs of Ambridge are equipped with winding holes, it hasn't
been mentioned, and reversing upstream might be a tad tricky.
