Did Apple miss an opportunity to call the M1 Ultra an M2? Especially as
it's two M1 Maxs joined together.

I also think the Pro/Max/Ultra nomenclature is a bit meaningless with
little delineation between them other than more cores etc.

The performance of these chips is staggering and they will fly off the
shelves. Maybe there's no need for an M2? Although whatever is going to be
in the new Mac Pro will have to be a beast.

M1 Supreme maybe?

no. the m1 is basically an a15 with different optimizations. it's a low
end chip, as found in the macbook air and others. the m2 will be
essentially an a16, with similar optimization differences, for the next
wave of those models.

the m1pro and m1max are higher end chips, with the m1 ultra being two
m1 max chips. at some point, there will be the m2 pro/max/ultra, also
for the next wave of models.

there are substantial performance differences.

yep.

they've used the name extreme before.
