Release notes here:

<https://bombich.com/kb/ccc6/release-notes>

Bootable Big Sur backups for Intel and M1 Macs - no mention - but does it
really matter? As mentioned before, you can always separately install macOS
to a data volume only CCC backup drive if you really want to. In any case,
there are other ways of restoring a Mac without the need for a bootable
backup!

I will miss the ability to make bootable clones in CCC 6 but, as you
say, there are other ways of restoring a Mac should the ultimate
disaster occur.

Mike Bombich has written a blog about the problems he has encountered in
making Big Sur bootable backups, much of it down to issues with Apple
Software Restore (ASR) / “signed” system volume. It seems Apple don’t
really want users copying the system volume to another drive! Also worth
noting is that you can’t boot an M1 Mac from an external drive if the
internal storage has failed! Anyway despite this, I’ll continue using TM
and CCC data volume backups on separate external drives and keep a bootable
macOS installer on a USB stick.

I don't know about CCC6, but I've just updated CCC5 to 5.1.27 (6196) and with
it came the comment that it did now support the creation of bootable clones of
Bg Sur.

I think I'll wait for a while - nothing to be gained here from faster backups;
at present it only takes a couple of minutes for each of our iMacs.

If I go to the CCC website, I find an item dated 19 May which starts "CCC
5.1.27 and CCC 6 can make bootable backups on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs
(11.3+) right now, and we'll continue to support that functionality as long as
macOS supports it."

I note that it says *on* Intel and Apple Silicon Macs rather than *of* Intel
and Apple Silicon Macs - I wonder if that is significant?

That’s what why I’m not attempting to make bootable backups via CCC until
the situation is clarified by Apple.

We can only wait and see.
