My FIL is running Kubuntu 18.04 and has been happily using thunderbird
for reading his gmail for years. It is set up to authenticate via OAuth2
to avoid the App Password shenanigans.

However, today he got an error with his connection saying "invalid
credentials". He's reset his gmail password after some effort, but still
no joy.

It's all working for me in a parallel set up, so any ideas why it isn't
working for him?

As I know with 0Auth2 'less secure apps' setting doesn't apply. Anyway
very often it's about the open ports.
Thunderbird

About Ports:
--------------------
If you use IMAP, that's port 143 (unencrypted) or 993 (encrypted).
Outgoing is either port 25, 587, or whatever your ISP tells you to use.
So once you figure out which ports you need based on your mail accounts,
you could allow those.

I would tend to assume he doesn't *actually* know his credentials or hasn't
entered them correctly.

Correct, oAuth2 doesn't require the (soon to be removed) "less secure apps"
setting.

He can get into gmail via the browser so that's not the issue. I suspect
thunderbird has not properly set a recent change to the password so will
get him delete the stored passwords on thunderbird and force a manual
login.
