for those of us who don't really like any distilled spirit (I like some
liqueurs, that may not be the same thing - alcohol isn't really
something I know much about), I wondered if the intervening beer was any
good? Or is it absolutely foul? (If normal beer drinkers find it
absolutely foul just because it is sweet, I'd probably be interested -
but if it tastes like sour milk, I wouldn't.)

I get the impression from wikedpedia that the kumis the Mogolians make by fermenting mare's milk tastes of sour milk.

That’s what I understand from everything I’ve seen and read. Well over two
decades ago or a bit more I made friends with a mature female student from
Ulan Bator but she was a city girl and she wouldn’t talk about what the
nomads ate and drank. She went home to do a bit of research at the end of
her first term and brought me back some tuned Russian foods that city folk
ate. Flaked horse meat, and a fish similar to pilchard. A digital camera
would have been perfect to capture our two cats clawing me to get at the
fish.
