Hm, I often get concerned at being addressed by name (or, more often,
addressed as Mr Mayes - who has never lived in this house or had this phone
number) by someone who has not announced who they are or where they are
calling from. If someone said they were from my energy provider I would
expect them to know my name and address already and maybe ask for my
account number for security.

I would be tempted to reply that they had phoned me and it was up to them
to convince me that they are who they say they are - seems a far more
likely scenario than that of me hijacking somebody else’s tefelone and
sitting awaiting a call with intent to defraud them!!!

Have a look at Octopus Energy who are very eco-friendly and the fourth
largest UK supplier and are an international company if you really want to
change. At least they’re unlikely to go belly up.

In my opinion they are no more or less likely to go belly up than any
of the other energy suppliers who are still in business although it's
often said that the retailers who are also energy producers are
stronger than the others. Remember that twenty-six energy companies
have gone bust in the last year and we thought (most of) them were
okay until they weren't.

The advice is still, I believe, to stick where you are until the
energy supply crisis blows over and if in the meantime your company
goes bust, let the Energy Regulator transfer you to their supplier of
last resort.

Octopus are by far the best energy company that I have dealt with.
Especially their service. Their web site is simple and bills are easy to
check.
They are not the cheapest (but not too far off).
If you are with a company that does fold, it may take ages to get a
positive balance refunded and to have your account rationalised.
It is really a question of how much you are willing to bet - increased
cost v. security of supply.

We have fixed rates until July with EonNext (whom I would not recommend to
ANYONE at any time under any circumstances) by then, I hope we will have
vastly reduced our need for gas and with some luck and a following wind
(but mainly sunlight) will have also reduced our need to buy in our
electrical need as we might have solar powering to help us. Our intention
is to move to Octopus Energy (thank you Philip, I have your details safe
ready for a referral job). At present, I am trying to convince EonNext that
it is their obligation to assist us in readying our electrical board for
installation of a Tesla Powerwall Gateway - they are not playing at all
fairly though:-((( They just want our exported energy at a low rate - but
that is not how I see it at all! Next winter’s gas bill will, I hope, be
very much reduced using an Air Sourced Heat Pump too!

This is absolutely correct. I worked in a (govt) contact centre, and
I know. If you receive an unsolicited call from anyone - including
someone who purports to be from a company you deal with, or a govt
organisation - who asks for information "to confirm your identity" do
not EVER give it.

Here is the correct procedure. This happened to me very recently. I
received a cold (unsolicited) call from a man who said he was from my
credit card company. "There has been an attempt to change the
telephone number linked to your account. I need to go through
security with you so that we can sort this out. Please confirm your
address."

I replied, "I'm telling you nothing. Make a note of this call on your
system. I'll phone you on the number on my card, and we'll proceed
from there. Goodbye." Caller said, "OK, fine."

A few minutes later, I was speaking to somebody in the fraud
department of my CC company. He confirmed the original call was
genuine, but that I was quite correct to do what I had done. He added
that if a cold caller ever insisted I do as they asked, it was certain
to be a fraudulent caller. Long story short, it was an attempt at
fraud, my card was cancelled, and a new card sent out.

Please be aware. There are many scammers and fraudsters out there,
and many purport to be from govt depts, especially HMRC.

I'm sure you've done this already but...

Like all other energy companies, Bulb have to make allowances for the
complete range of customer abilities and they write a lot about it on
their website with links that eventually bring me here...
https://bulb.co.uk/priority-services-register/

I can't get any further without signing in as a customer but on the
other side there ought to be a means to register that you cannot use
the phone. I suggest you get that fact clearly on their register.

Living with a severely deaf person has taught me that most of the time
they want to appear just the same as everybody else and pretend that
it's not that bad and while they have tricks and tactics to make it
seem as if they know what other people are saying to them, sometimes,
sometimes they just have to come out and say, "I'm deaf. I can't do
this. You have to make allowances for me."

If you haven't done so already, it seems this might be a good time to
register your difficulties with them. There's absolutely no harm in
over-emphasising the difficulties you have - and again from my own
experience, you may think it is over-emphasising but those around you
will probably still think you are holding back.

If you are already registered with them and still getting all this
s**t or your registering with them doesn't clear up the problem PDQ
then remind them they are straying into DDA territory.

Nick
