SCHOOLS in Dorset still have time to get on their bikes and sign up to the UK’s biggest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling competition.

The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel from March 21 to April 1 aims to highlight the benefits an active school run can have on young people’s physical and mental health, and the environment – as well as saving fuel costs for parents. In 2019, the competition helped parents to save an estimated £1.6 million in petrol costs across the UK during the fortnight.

Sustrans is a charity that aims to make walking, wheeling and cycling easier, and is delivering the competition in partnership with Schwalbe and Dorset Council, as part of the Bike It Plus project.

Formerly known as the Sustrans Big Pedal, it has been running since 2010 and sees schools compete on each day of the challenge to make the most journeys by walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling.

Local schools signed up so far include: Atlantic Academy Portland; Beaminster St Mary's Academy; Bridport Primary School; Broadmayne First School; Cerne Abbas First School; Damers First School; Dorset Studio School; Greenford Primary School; Radipole Primary School; Southill Primary School; St Mary's Catholic First School, Dorchester; St Mary's First School Charminster; St John's Primary School; St Michael's Primary School; The Prince of Wales School; The Wey Valley Academy.

Sarah Leeming, Sustrans Interim Director for South of England said: "Hundreds of thousands of pupils have risen to the challenge and embraced active travel each year.

“This is such a fun event for schools to take part in, and for pupils, their families, and staff to experience the many benefits of an active school run.

“More people choosing to walk, wheel or cycle for essential everyday journeys means fewer cars on the road, helping to ease congestion and reduce air pollution around the school gates.”
The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is open to all primary and secondary schools including SEN/ASN/ALN schools, with prizes to be won every day.

Free resources are available to encourage pupils to see their local area from a new perspective, learn about the benefits of active travel and discover amazing journeys to school from around the world.
