Poms can buy a *pound* of apples or a *pound* of sausages like in the good old days, before the stinking EU.

I still use them myself, but one does have to be very careful on Gallons, as
the US Gallon is much smaller than ours was.

Surely its a metre inconvenience since most can be calculated and anyway,
you can put both sizes on products if you like.

Shows you never go shopping. Apples and sausages don't come in factory
made weights. If they are sold loose, you can ask for a pound or half
kilo, but pay for the actual weight.

And you're far more likely to buy such things by the number. Like 1
sausage per person.

Price per pound or kilo is only to allow an easy comparison with
competitor's pricing.

Err, UK currency went metric too. And petrol is only sold by the litre.

The chaos is that schools in the UK have only taught the metric system for
years now. So only very old farts remember pounds and ounces. And only
extremely thick ones won't understand kilos after all these years.

**You've hit the nail on the head. A pitifully insignificant 5% of the
planet's population has clung to Imperial measurements. The logic of the
Metric system is impossible to ignore. We are base 10 creatures and have
been for a very long time.

16 ozs = 1lb
14lbs = 1 stone
22240lbs = 1 Ton

WTF were they thinking.

The French get a lot of stuff wrong, but the Metric system is not one of
them.

Well, the USA is in illustrious company clinging to Imperial - it's
them, Liberia and Myanmar.

Being 71, I'm still bilingual in imperial and SI although my entire
working life in science and engineering has been conducted in SI.

And the French used to own the kilogram (Le Grand K, an alloy cylinder
of Platinum and Iridium), but that has now been retired and the kg is
based on the Mole - which required a super-accurate measurement of
Planck's constant. So ther are no longer any physical standards for
the fundamental units.

The French never owned the kilogram.

Le Grand K was and still is held and owned by the BIPM. It may be
located at the the Pavillon de Breteuil in Sevres but BIPM is a
permanent international organization established by the Metre
Convention, financed and managed by the signatories to the Convention.

Distances are still quoted in miles and fuel efficiency given in miles per gallon.

Australia went fully metric decades ago.
The TW troll has no idea the UK did not.

That's true. That building has better international protection than an
embassy. Even the occupying Germans left it alone.

** So the UK, the USA and Canada are pitiful and insignificant ?
Europe adopted metrics by 1850, prior to which the confusion of measures was massive.
But countries using Imperial measures had no such problem, so no reason to change.

FYI:

If the TW raving fuckwit is so keen decimals, why not decimal time ?

10 hours per day with 100 mins per hour of 100 seconds each.
Obviously a far better way to go !!..
Seconds just get a bit shorter.

So far as I know, people in the UK have, since 'metrication', still been
able to specify quantities in ye olde ways *provided* they also specify the
metric values as well. Although it has become rarer as people simply got
used to metric. Hence my first reaction is to wonder if this (apparent)
'policy' is simply waffle. However...

BloJo simply works on the basis of saying whatever he thinks will make him
'popular' or 'liked' and let him get what *he* wants - money, influence,
being 'important', etc. And he makes more money from what he writes for
newspapers, etc, than he does from being PM. His ex-best-mate has reported
BloJo as saying that the editor of the Daily Hate is his *real* boss, not
the British public.

Hence if the report is correct it is probably just another instance of him
saying something for the sake of a headline and 'popularity' - in this case
with the older farts amongst those who he thinks can be got to keep
'liking' him by spouting drivel they want to hear.

If you recall it was a mixe up with metric that crashed a multi million

The USA definitions of USA 'imperial' measures aren't actually the same as
the UK ones. Having spent time in a small town in Kansas they seem to have
kept these as many of them have no real idea about, or interest in, the
world beyond. So politicians leave them like this.

More precisely, it is based on Planck's constant via the Mole.

UK currency is decimal, not 'metric'. We just kept the names after a short
time of using terms like "new pence" and "old pence".

Crikey. That must explain the things you've built. Measurements only need

I'm a bit ambivalent about it. The imperial measuring system - based on
bits of the body - may actually have been more practical to use for
practical things. Like building work and so on where you're not going to
work to millimetre accuracy. For tech drawing, of course, metric is far
more convenient.
