Is there someting equivalent to Robocopy for PC which will copy all new
and changed files from source filesystem to destination filesystem, and
create a log to show which files were copied and which were not?

The above two statements don't make sense. What do you mean when you say
"fired up the Pro"? It should already have been "fired up" and running
Migration Assistant.

So perhaps the OP should use this to copy all his files from the old
machine to the new one? The logs should then show what failed and why.

What I meant was that....

20 hours later after Migration Assistant had done its transfer. When I
restarted the "new" Pro it had 1.91 TB of space left - so where was the
data that was transferred.

Ah I see.

Migration Assistant writes to system.log which you can view using the
Console application. However restarting before checking first may have
lost the info. :-(

Hopefully not and there may be something in there as to why it couldn't
read and/or save the photos.

OK - update. Photos all transferred fine... and after the Photo library
updated they are all there and visible on the "new" MBP... Phew!

However, the music is invisible! I transferred the whole iTunes folder
from the old hard drive to the Music folder and its there.... alongside
anoth folder called Music that has "Media" and Music Library in there.

So I think this is because the "new" HD is running Catalina and not High
Sierra and so the default folder for "Music" will be the Music folder
and not the iTunes folder.

So whats the easiest way to correct this? Move the files across? Rename
folders? Point the Music App to the Tunes folder? Re-import from the
old HD into the correct Catalina folder? Something else?

Thanks in advance for digging me out of my hole !

Think I have it sorted.. I selected the old .itl file and all seems to
be appearing nicely... I can relax and pull the cork out now :-)

The Music app in Catalina can store its databases in one place, and
using Preferences > Files > Music Media folder location you can tell it
the files are all organised and stored somewhere else.

I'm doing that with the media on my NAS. Oddly, it hasn't found some of
the files on my NAS even though they're entirely readable etc. I'm not
sure how to fix that, but the File > Library > Organise Library >
Consolidate Files option looks tempting.

One last annoyance. Her "Notes" haven't transferred to the new HD. Its
a big deal as she uses them a lot (several hundred in there!).

I think its a Synching/storage issue in iCloud. She never knowingly
uses the cloud. I just had a look and her 5GB is fully used - 14kb left!

Notes is synched to her cloud on the laptop and iPhone - but the notes
showing on the phone and old HD are not appearing on the new HD?

Tried turning Sync off and back on - no joy. I will try and get her to
free some space in the cloud.

I tried copying the "Notes" folder from the old HD (user>library, etc..)
but that didnt work.

All thoughts/ideas appreciated

thanks JohnB

The computer with the new HD needs to have the same AppleID as her phone
if she wishes to access her old Notes.

Hi John

This item is 'from the horses mouth' so to speak!

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT203993

I have the same AppleID on my iPhone, iPad Pro, my iMac and iPod.

Right now I have Linux Mint installed and running on my old 24 inch iMac
so do not need an AppleID on it (but I think I did some while ago now!)

Good luck,

David

She needs to sign in with her existing AppleId on the "new" Mac via
System Preferences. Notes and other cloud stuff should then sync but
give it time.

And, if that doesn't work you could always try investing a couple of quid in a
larger icloud storage plan. Easy enough to cancel whenever you want and it
might give a solution...

Yes I pay a measly sum every month to get 50GB!

Notes -> Preferences should have the default account set to iCloud on
all devices.

Just to make life complicated, there are two types of Notes - iCloud
ones and IMAP ones linked to any non-Apple email accounts.

So, on the Mac, go into System Preferences -> Internet Accounts and look
in each email account (iCloud plus any others) and see whether the "Use
with Notes" box is ticked.

Secondly, Notes are only synced when email is synced. Great if your
settings are 'push' not so great if manual. So go onto the phone and
manually sync email then do the same on the Mac.

That explains why my Notes don't always sync immediately!

OK.. the Migration Assistant approach to this was a total dogs breakfast
- as the follow up posts below testify.

So I have just wiped the new HD clean and used CCC to transfer it again
(as above). Took about 7 hours for the 600GB. Put the new HD into the
better MBP and it was perfect.

Everything copied just fine ... seamless.

Lesson learned !

Thanks again for everyone's input
