Plans to install new bus and cycle lanes on Cambridge's Milton Road have been approved. The plans have been greenlit by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) in an effort to improve journeys into the city.

The project will see new bus lanes installed on the road along with Cambridge's second Cyclops junction, which will be built at the junction of Milton Road with Kings Hedges Road. Cyclops junctions - which stands for Cycle Optimised Protected Signals - are designed to make busy junctions safer for cyclists.

The £24m scheme will be built by Milestone, which has already completed a similar scheme on Histon Road. It has been designed to provide a faster, safer and more reliable bus and active travel journey between Cambridge and communities north of the city. It is also hoped it will lower pollution in the area.

It is expected that the project will take two years to complete. Construction is due to begin in the spring with all junctions on Milton Road set to be upgraded to promote and improve active travel journeys, such as walking and cycling. The roundabout at the junction of Milton Road and Elizabeth Way will remain, but will be improved with segregated off-road links and signalised crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.

The recent upgrade to Histon Road required a one-way closure during its construction. However, two-way traffic will be maintained along Milton Road during the majority of the work. The bus lanes will instead be closed to make room for the work.

The GCP is carrying out the first review of Cambridge's road network in more than 30 years, with the aim of ensuring the future travel needs of the city. A public consultation will e carried out in the summer to allow people to have their say on the new road system. The public will be asked their views on walking and cycling priority areas, bus routing, street categories as well as areas that will be exempt from the requirements.

The board will also carry out a public consultation on designs for phase two of the flagship Chisholm Trail walking and cycling route in the summer. This will involve upgrading existing infrastructure as well as building new off-road active travel infrastructure, such as cycle lanes.
