Nice speech. Nice to see someone put Hanson down. Calling out
anti-vaxxers for what they are - selfish and ignorant. What a pity we're
stuck with a useless PM who just enabled them. I don't always agree with
Lambie, but she is on the money with this one.

Go Lambie. A donation is on it's way. If I lived in Tassie, I'd vote for
her.

Pauline Hanson needs to be put down. Permanently.

What did he do?

Yes, she is.

I like her. I think she's pretty down to Earth and has realistic views.
Like you I don't agree with everything she says, but then I can't
remember the last time I met someone that I did.

I saw a bit of that on the tv news last night and I was pleasantly
surprised, generally I think of her as a bit of a nutter but she's on
the money this time.

Yep, there's only two types of people who do religion. Nuts or charlatans.

There is that. But to an extent, one has to forgive delusions that are
the result of indoctrination while a child, not least because
questioning the sanity of a large proportion of the world's population
is a tad disconcerting.

Religious indoctrination should be considered a form of child abuse, and
prosecuted accordingly. But I'm not holding my breath.

**It's all about education. I grew up believing in that silliness, but,
by about age 13, I began to seriously question the logic of such
beliefs. How any adult could accept the concept of supernatural beliefs
is beyond, well, belief.

**I agree. It is child abuse, pure and simple. At the very least, no
child should be taught such gobbledegook in ANY educational institution,
during school hours. I have no issue with the teaching of religion, in a
purely objective, historical perspective.

Some people have better mental defences than others. I wasn't brought up
believing in God, so I don't know how I would have fared.

I'm christened a Roman Catholic but worked I out it was all a load of
ridiculous nonsense by age 11.

My father was brought up Roman Catholic too, but as I said, I wasn't
brought up to believe in God, so at some point he figured it out too.

Many of the non-believers I've met were brought up as Catholics.

I think Catholic teachings contribute a lot to the growth of atheism ;)

See my general comment earlier about ALL politicians.
Lambie was first elected as a member of the United Australia party and
it would be difficult to find a bigger bunch of nutters in Australian
politics.
On the positive side her background is a lot more "average working
class" than many pollies who have legal backgrounds and come from
wealthy families so its good to have people from diverse backgrounds in
politics.

For me it was an Anglican priest that helped it along. When I first came
to this country as a kid I didn't know any English and I ended up in the
Anglican scripture class through a simple misunderstanding. (I didn't
know what Anglican was, I assumed it was all the same shit). I was
scolded and thrown out of class when the preaches discovered I was a
Catholic. I was already questioning it anyway but I thought to myself,
so much for the grace of god and all that rubbish. Religious types are
deluded and fucking hypocrites with it.

Age ~13 is when kids begin to *question everything*. The problem is that
the *indoctrination*, and that is what it is, begins much, much earlier
at an age where kids will accept anything and everything.

A child should be taught about *every single religion*, with no
exclusions. It should *not* occur until High School and definitely not
until the child exits the concrete thinking stage. Children should
preferably be taught about religion by someone like Richard Dawkins or
Daniel Dennett.

I was brought up by a parent who was religious and a parent who wasn't.

A friend from long ago, a South American, did three or four years in a
Catholic seminary in Venezuela. After that period of time engaged in
fairly intense study, he left it all behind, his only comment on
religion being "bullshit".

Well you should be pointing that bone at your parents, as they're the
ones who set you on that path.

I have no problem with religion per se', as long as it's not rammed down
my throat. And regardless of what you may happen to think, it's not all
bad. For some, particularly the elderly, it's a form of social network
that doesn't exist anywhere else.

Take my mother in law for example. She's in her 80's, and she goes to
Church every Sunday morning. She sings in the church choir, she helps
out with fetes and meals for others and so on. I don't think she's
overly religious, in fact I have no idea if she has a theological bent
or not as I don't ask and she doesn't say. To her it seems to be about
the social gatherings. Meeting up with her friends, helping those who
need it, and feeling like she has a purpose.

If that's what she likes to do it's fine with me, and if she chooses to
do it under the umbrella of the local Church I couldn't care less. As
long as she doesn't force her views onto others then it's no one else's
business what she believes in.

There is certainly that aspect to it, I've also seen business people
using church for networking where they meet like minded people.
My wife is a church elder and many of my friends and relatives go to
church, I would also call a few ministers friends but interestingly they
know that I'm not interested in religion so they never try to preach to me.
I've even been to plenty of church social functions and not once has
anyone preached to me and I don't waste my time telling them my views so
we get along just fine.
I suspect that quite a few people go to church for the social
interaction rather than being overly religious.

Better for her to have a social life and be happy than to sit around and
be miserable, better for her health too.

Yeah, it'd be dreadful if she was like her son Darren.

Which is exactly how it should be. What other people want to believe in
is *their* business, and as long as it doesn't impact on me I couldn't
care less. The corner block next door to me got sold recently to a
Samoan Church group who want to build a church on it. Great. Knock
yourselves out and have a blast. I *really* couldn't care less as long
as I'm not affected by it.

To me religion is like a penis. Play with it all you want, but don't get
it out in public and don't try to ram it down anyone else's throat.

> I suspect that quite a few people go to church for the social

I think some of the clergy themselves aren't overly religious. There has
long been a Modernist movement within the Catholic Church (and
presumably others) that subscribes to the view that the writings of the
Bible are more a case of historical myth rather than an accurate factual
account of the history of mankind.

Indeed.
