Photos on Monterey: I create an album and put some pictures into it. I
drag that album onto the "shared albums" heading in the left hand pane
and it pops up a teeny-weeny dialog asking for the recipient's email. I
put that in and one other.

Then in the teeny-weeny notes area I try to type a message and find I
can't even press the return key to get a new line - it just selects what
I've entered instead.

So now my message just says "Hi <name" and I can't add any more. I press
send (or okay or whatever I can't remember) intending to manually send
an accompanying email and ... nothing.

No sign of anything being sent; no sign of an email in my outbox or sent
box; nothing.

Really Apple is that your idea of "it just works"?

No, that’s not how it works.

You create a Shared album, with your selected images in it, which you can
do without inviting others at first if you wish. However, when you add
recipients, they need an iCloud account email address for them to be able
to directly share the folder.

When you add them to the recipients list, it simply sends them an invite
request on their device, no email is actually sent.

The notes section is just to add a basic caption to the album.

Once they accept the invite, then they can view and share that album.

If they don’t have an iCloud account, then you can copy out a URL so they
can view the shared album in any browser.

If you want to send someone a bunch of images separately, then you use the
‘Share’ icon instead, and select Mail as the option to send with (or their
name may appear in the recents list).
