Well. It's been quite a day so far. It started out the way most days do.
I got up and rode to my cafe', got my usual coffee with cream, sat with
the crew and chatted about the usual politics, health and crap. Then I
thought I needed a loaf of bread, so why not go someplace different and
break in the new front tyre. How about Dudley's? Yeah. It's a little out
of the way, but a fun ride. Roads with names like Wildcat Canyon Rd,
Gunn Stage Rd, and Old Julian Hiway. Dudley's is in the road junction
town of Santa Ysabel, which has a population less than 100. I made it
before noon, got some sourdough and a big apple strudel and then had to
figure what next? How about Mount Palomar? I could take Mesa Grande Rd
and go by Lake Henshaw, then take the East Grade. Did that and saw some
great views with zero clouds anywhere, but when I got to the top, where
the big observatory is (and its 200" telescope,) the gate was closed.
Covid, I'm guessing. Damn. OK, so down the South Grade and heading home.
The last fun roads were Couser Canyon and Lilac Rd. I got to the coast
via Gopher Canyon, then took the Pacific Coast Hiway home, which was the
typical crowded weekend mob. So, the ride went from sea level to 5550'
and back, and covered 195 miles. For a cup of coffee and some bread. I
think the tyre's OK.

Nice! I've been to Julian a couple of times, and Palomar once. That brought back some

Thanks for the write up. Your day went better than mine has for the
past couple of days.

1st, my bag (brand new Travelpro case, totaling 50 lbs worth
of clothing and misc business equipment for a 2 week work trip)
didn't appear on the baggage carousel after flying halfway around
the world. Oops.

Finally, the next day (2 days after starting my journey) I get a text
from the airline saying it had shown up. Have my cow-orker drive me
back to the airport to pick it up. Huge relief. That was yesterday.

Then this AM, I get an email saying the airline claims I skipped the
last leg of my 3-leg trip so they're going to cancel my return flight.

Still waiting to hear from the travel agency whether that is resolved.

Not to mention the daily weaponized drone attacks... God I love
this job.

I tried to make it to Julian in February of 2013 after visiting Turby with a co-worker.

Made it about 4 miles from there before having to turn around.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/fL6AmFR9KWtRsmYH8

I managed to drop my rental R1200GT (?) when turning around. Luckily
my riding buddy was able to pick it up- he was very strong. I wrenched
my back something terrible and scoffed Vicodin at the motel in El
Centro until I was over the worst.

I heard that in the voice of Garrison Keillor.

"Well, it's been a quiet week in ..."

Weather, or more accurately perhaps, climate envy alert. Does the sun
really always shine in SoCal? Been a fair amount of sun here, but also
colder than some winters of late. Proper hard frosts and some fog.

Too busy tidying up the house for viewings and doing 'drive by'
assessments of possible new home bases to contemplate taking a bike out.
Sorting out the garage is going to be a major undertaking when the time
comes. One shed not only needs emptying of SOB bric-a-brac but probably
demolishing. Might be worth holding a 'garage sale' or a one house
'vide-grenier'. Can't even give some stuff away though. No interest in a
Morini Akront alloy wheel rim or a later style 250 2C dual seat in good
condition gratis to anyone willing to collect them. Oh well, tip trips R
us. Might even have to hire a small skip.

The new to us vehicle of a type that cannot be named here but rhymes
with rotordome has only been used one night to sleep in but was
extraordinarily comfortable. Gets a tow bar on Monday and then will be
ready as a not race transporter for two-wheelers; IC, e, or pedal only.
It makes stately progress after the 3.0Td Granvia but the little idiot
shift up indicator encourages you in to 6th at surprisingly low speed.
I've even booked to do two Vintage/classic riding events at some
distance from home using it as a base. The Giants Run in Dorset on the
37 Sunbeam and the Three Moors (Bodmin,Dartmoor/Exmoor) taster run in
June on the 57 Gilera 175. The latter is like a mini version of the Giro
with nights in hotels and a support van for gear. Looking forward to it.

The MX5 was treated to new plush 'OEM' floor mats. My right heel had
nearly worn through the driver's side. That made the cracked/crazed
vinvl on the steering wheel look even shabbier, so I treated that to a
'glove'. Leather/cloth effect and sophisticated black. Makes the wheel a
tad larger but gives a sporty feel. Still going well at 126000 and now
the lad is 25 I can contemplate putting him on the insurance so he can
borrow it occasionally when the spring comes. Now he lives in that
London he sensibly decided having a fairly flash car parked most of the
time was a bit daft so he sold his snazzy VW Golf GTD. He had a Mk4 MX5
for a while so driving a proper one with no power steering or ABS will
be an experience for him.

A bit peeved to find the format of the Classic TT/MGP has been massively
changed, with as I understand it, no classic races at all. I had toyed
with trying to get over to Pahnd Island for a late 50th anniversary
trip, but without the eclectic mix of machines around, the lure isn't so
strong.

Are you likely to be able to get across the pond this year?

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick there. They're just not calling it the Classic TT anymore. From the ACU press release:

The new look for the event will bring to an end the use of the Classic TT designation, with a five-race programme planned featuring a range of classes for modern and classic machinery all held under the Manx Grand Prix title.

The Manx Grand Prix Races for modern machinery will be more closely aligned to the Isle of Man TT Races, with the Senior and Junior Races, for Supersport and Supertwin machines respectively, operating to similar (but not identical) specifications as seen at the TT, giving riders the opportunity to achieve their goals on the TT course.

The Classic Manx Grand Prix races will build on the Island’s reputation for high profile classic motorcycle racing, with the world’s best teams and many of the leading TT competitors expected to take part.

D'oh. Reply not Follow up strikes again! Can you tune Thunderbird to

Fair enough <checks>. I know they have significantly reduced the overall
length and no newcomers race? Also just two 'Classic Races'. Plus no
Jurby Festival either.

So back to how the MGP used to be when I first switched to it from the
TT back in the mid 90's. I remember chatting to Champ's mate Keith in
the Hailwood suite about more races for SOBs and the NHCA introducing a
Forgotten Era championship.

Can't see them getting the visitor numbers they used to recently with
this new format - covid notwithstanding.

Perhaps a good thing for the real enthusiasts. It had been getting as
manic as TT week,

Apropos of nothing...

Keillor is an alumnus of my high school (Anoka HS in Anoka Minnesota)
.... considerably before my time, but he was a classmate of my aunt
and uncle.

He also worked as a parking attendant at the University of Minnesota,
as did I during my ~ 6 years at university. He used to talk about
his time there when he had a radio show on Minnesota Public Radio
back in the 70s, before Prairie Home Companion was a thing.

Lived out north of town. So you might say, my stomping grounds are
in fact the basis for Lake Woebegone.

Not a valanced rim, so not sought after by the cognoscenti Morinisti.

The 36 poke hole 'angles' may not suit other hubs (than a Morini 350
rear drum version - later large diameter to be full anorak).

Wouldn't mind giving it a go depending on how soon you need it gone.

Doesn't take up much room compared to the rest of the two sheds contents
that need to go or be moved.

Might even come to Hartland in the Vantage to point, laugh, help with
timing and do trials of my 'project system'. Assuming associate members
who aren't entered for the event are allowed to park overnight.

I don't see why not. Assuming the event goes ahead and the weather
forecast isn't atrocious, I'm hoping to get there at least a day early
for a mini break.

Thanks, that link worked.

My wife (2009 EX500) and son (1995 EX500) and I (FJR) rode through
Yellowstone in June 2011 and there was considerable snow along the
side of the road, although the roads themselves were dry and it was
sunny and perhaps 16 deg C.

Sleazy and I (KLR650s) and Scott from Michigan (Honda XR650) rode
through Grand Teton and Yellowstone in Sept 2014, that was great fun.

One of those places I been glad I visited at 2 different times of year,
camping in the Summer was great, but crowded.

It was wayyy emtpier in the Spring.
Didn't bother camping :-)

Norway, June 2005. Had slightly more snow :-)

That one actually looks pretty similar to how much snow was beside
the road in Yellowstone in early June 2011.

Anytime you're riding with that much snow, it's definitely "Adventure
Touring".
