Please forgive this ignorant question but I'm not very numerological.

I've got two Macs on my home gigabit-ethernet LAN. There is an external
USB3 SSD connected to USB3 on Mac #1. Mac #2 is older and only has USB2.
From #2 I connect through the LAN to #1 as a server and mount the SSD as
a volume on #2. Is this best practice, vis-a-vis moving data from the
SSD to Mac #2? Or, it just occurred to me, maybe it would be better to
simply connect the SSD directly to #2 with USB2?

TIA.

I’m no expert either! But if both Macs have cards that support gigabit
speeds and the cables do too, then surely LAN transfer would be quicker
than using a direct connection to the USB2 port. No doubt someone will now
shoot me down ;)

USB3 is nominally 10 times faster than USB2, so it would seem your best
option is as you describe, with the SSB connected to Mac #1.

Of course, you are reliant on the network not beong congested - that
neither machine is trying to access the internet or some other hardware
that you haven't told us about. And Mac #1 must be powered up for the
duration of the transfer - don't let it go to sleep in the middle.

I'd try out the different methods. Gigabit LAN doesn't always communicate at
maximum rates, and USB devices differ. It'll also be a good way to check that
everything's connected optimally, cables aren't damaged etc.

And then you've got the convenience of the always attached SSD on #1 - which
I'd expect to be quickest as USB2 is the theoretical bottleneck.
