A driver who injured a cyclist has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving after he was caught on helmet cam knocking her over. Paul Nigel Miley, 52, of Main Street in Ashby St Ledger, was recorded driving without due care and attention as he drove past the group of riders near the Northamptonshire village on June 11 last year.

The group had been riding along a single-track road when a Land Rover Defender drove towards them without slowing and forced its way past, causing one of the cyclists to fall off her bike. The footage was uploaded to the Force’s Operation Snap online portal and when reviewed by police officers, the video proved beyond doubt that Miley had shown no consideration for other road users.

PC Mo Allsopp-Clarke of Northamptonshire Police’s Safer Roads Team said: “Miley initially pleaded not guilty to the offence, claiming he had driven extremely slowly past the group and was unable to move further across. The video evidence clearly showed that Miley had no consideration for the cyclists on that day, and when he appeared at Magistrates’ Court, he changed his plea to guilty.
“His driving fell below the standard of a competent and careful driver, which could have very easily ended in tragic consequences, and I’m pleased the courts have dealt with the driver positively.

"Drivers should always try to give cyclists and other vulnerable road users at least 1.5m of space and pass slowly. In this instance, on this road, that would not be possible.

“On this occasion, the correct thing to do would have been to come to a ///stop/// to allow the cyclists to pass safely. It takes a couple of seconds and then everyone can continue their journey in safety.”

Miley pleaded guilty when he appeared before magistrates on Friday, March 18 and received five points on his driving licence, fined £1,008 and ordered to pay £100 in costs and a £101 victim surcharge.

PC Allsopp-Clarke added: “The success of Operation Snap is down to the continued support from the public, who enable us to take action against driving offences we otherwise wouldn’t see. Hopefully this case demonstrates that we take all instances of poor driving very seriously and we will prosecute offenders accordingly, which can only be a good thing to help keep our roads safer.”

People can report driving offences by uploading video evidence via a simple online portal on the Force website and completing a form, which automatically creates a witness statement to provide a full account of the incident. Reports are then triaged by trained police staff, who check the footage to ensure it falls within the scheme's remit and contains clear views of an offender’s number plates so they can be identified.

If it matches the Operation Snap criteria, police officers in the Safer Roads Team then examine the footage. If a driving offence is identified, legal proceedings will begin where required. The team only has 14 days to investigate any offences and members of the public are asked to submit their videos as soon after the incident as possible to allow the maximum time for the footage to be reviewed.

Anyone who submits footage via Operation Snap can find out the outcome of their submission by following the link on their confirmation email which will take them to a monthly update. If I was the Land Rover driver I would have the video examined by an
expert, and based on that consider an appeal against the verdict.

The video was taken by the helmet cam of the third rider. Using the
slider in the video frame to analyse the movements it is clear that the
third rider is travelling faster than the second rider - the video
starts with an estimated gap of about a cycle length, but as the cam
swings round in order for the second rider to make the offensive gesture
at the now-departing Land Rover, the rear axle of the second rider has
disappeared below the bottom of the frame. When the helmet returns to
looking forward, the second rider in in the ditch, not having been in
contact with the Land Rover. Did the third rider collide with the second
rider, knocking her into the ditch?

Good that driver was taken to court and proven to be guilty. The ignorance of all the anti-cyclist responses on Twitter iactually increases the awareness that this driving behaviour is illegal. This happens so many times, I just wish my bike was a Transformer some days. Drivers might also behave better if the UK gun law was changed, because shooting someone who is attacking you with their car weapon might be considered self defence (that was a joke btw...no-one wants a gun law like the U.S)

On our Tuesday ride we were on a sunken single lane road and came upon a horse followed by a car. We chatted to the rider as we passed, all super friendly, but the car, which would not get past the horse for some time, having pulled across for the first bike, pulled out as more of us were passing, with only just enough room to scoot with a foot in the verge and one of our experienced riders got caught out in the melee and ended up in the verge.

The riders behind were amazed that the driver was frowning and shaking her head, when all she had to do was stay put for another 20 seconds and we would have been gone, and she could get back to another 5 minutes of admiring the horse's backside. Time saved: zero. Nuisance caused: pride, irritation and risk of injury due to an unnecessarily closed gap. Low speed falls are just as dangerous as high speed falls.

I agree with the verdict but the thread title is misleading, it implies physical contact which did not happen. The victim should have unclipped. I use SPD's and unclip whenever I stop pedalling as a precaution.

After so many years of using SPD's it's instinctive to unclip and keep my (right) foot over the pedal whenever I stop pedalling so it would have been in the first second or two. Don't get me wrong, the driver was just another arrogant, entitled motorvehicleist who assumed it was the cyclist's responsibility to get out of his (Oh so important) way and he has be judged and found wanting by his betters.

Anti-social morons like this don't even consider slowing down. You do wonder, as other posts have suggested, that no matter how many points he collected he would still retain his licence through a series 'we really will remove your licence next time'

I always find it easier to unclip with my straight leg rather then the bent one. I also tend to unclip on my right rather then left when stopping. If this cyclist was the same, she would have unclipped leaning towards the oncoming car.

As for space, that is probably a hindsight thing but I suspect front cyclist seeing two tonnes of material coming towards them at 30-40mph with very little wiggle room might have thought slowing/stopping was easier and safer, especially if they had no chance to change down gears beforehand so that could lead to wobbles / dropped chains if trying to continue to cycle

The main takeaway though is if the advancing car had slowed down and been courteous to the cyclists with space, they both would have passed with no incident and the middle cyclist would not have been injured.

Yes, I've had that too. A tandem rider and his girlfriend came blasting
round a blind corner, saw us walking towards him, he shouting 'Fuck
you'. We had to step into the road to get out of his way, as he showed

Hi Lara, hope you’re well. Just letting you know I’ve taken a screenshot of your comment and sent it to a cycling pressure group that collects such comments. They use them to provide background info to the court if the person is ever involved in a collision in the future.

She then tweeted: "Definitely knocked a cyclist off his bike earlier. I have right of way - he doesn't even pay road tax! (SIC) #Bloodycyclists."

Norwich magistrates convicted her of failing to stop after an accident and failing to report it, which she denied.

Way, of Watton, was acquitted of driving without due care and attention.

She was ordered to pay a £337 fine, £300 in costs and was given seven points on her licence.
'Biggest regret'

She said: "The tweet was spur of the moment. It was ridiculous and stupid and I apologise to all cyclists.

"It is the biggest regret of my life so far."

The court heard Mr Hockley suffered bruises and minor damage to his bike in the incident at Rockland All Saints on 19 May, when he was riding in the 100-mile Boudicca Sportive with his friend Jason [Jay] Sexton.

Describing the trial as a relatively routine case of driving without due care and attention, prosecutor Stephen Poole added: "Why it becomes notorious is because the suspect went home and tweeted.

"It was that tweet which has put this into the public arena."
'Loud crunch'

Mr Hockley said: "A car came around the corner, narrowly missing Jay.

"The car was heading over to my side of the road.

"I was hit on the leg by the wing and on the arm by the wing mirror (SIC) and tried to slam on my brakes to regain control."

He said there was a loud crunch and he was knocked into a hedge.

Claiming the collision was Mr Hockley's fault, Way said she had been driving at 15mph and her road positioning was as far to the nearside as possible.

"Afterwards I looked in my mirror," she added.

"I did not think he was injured - if I did I would definitely have stopped."

The court heard she lost her job as an accountant as a result of the tweet.

Way refused to comment as she left court, saying she had signed an exclusive television deal.
