I'm after a basic unit to convert the TV's optical out to stereo analogue,
which will connect to my (analogue) hifi. I'd like to take the power from one
of the TV's USB ports. Any recommendations?

I had this in mind:

https://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg3027/audio-converter-r-l-to-optical/dp/AV27974

I'd need to get a USB to power plug cable.

That is an analogue to digital converter, you want the other way round;
digital to analogue.

A USB outlet, unless specified higher, will only provide 500mA but the
box is supplied with a 1A supply indicating it probably draws more than
500mA.

You need item AV23317 from the same source which will run off a USB
supply. A suitable power cable is included.

However it is a tad more expensive!

I in the end found that my Samsung tvs usb power was so dirty it put crud
on the analogue outputs, and if you wiggled the plug it would get better and
worse. In the end I bought a usb wall wart, ie not the cheapest on, as they
are dire for interference as well.

I also found that the analogue output was weaker than most other devices on
the hi if. I ended up buying a pre amp with volume control, and yes, you
guessed, it needed yet another usb wall wart.

Not many of the cheap ones have mini/micro USB socket, but it seems to
come with a USB->barrel power cable.

The one I suggested is also a digital to analogue converter

Yes - I've bought one of those cables to power a 5V radio from a power pack
(earlier post).

Mmm - maybe I'll have to use a separate USB power supply. A bit annoying as it
adds to the cable and plug situation.

That does seem to be the thing, thanks. As you say, quite reassuringly priced
though.

It's always worth looking through that box of wall warts you never
threw away. Older ones with transformers that feel heavy don't have
switchers in them and give much cleaner power. They are likely to be
9V, but that is easily dropped.

And it is designed to run off a standard USB socket and comes with a

Ended up ordering a cheap D/A convertor on ebay - a 'Optical Coaxial Toslink
Digital to Analog Audio Converter L6C0 Adapter L/R D7K4' for about £5
including cables. Works perfectly except the output is a little low compared
to other sources. Also needed to adjust the TV's standby settings so that it
wasn't constantly powered up.

Don't, use a separate psu. If the TV is a Samsung, then you get so much crap
coming up the 5v line from the usb that its ridiculous. I just use a normal
5v type charger. No crackles fizzes buzzes and general wobbly noises when
you knock the cable to the usb port.

Yup. The reason is your optical converter is designed to give peak output
at digital full scale. But TV sound only peaks to -10dBFS. If you go to
some FreeView radio stations you'll find they match your other sources.

I found a more expensive one with an adjustable output level. Also
includes a headphone socket. Control for that also adjusts the phono
outputs. And has enough gain to make up that 10dB.

I'm using one of the LG TV's USB sockets - works fine, and saves (yet) another
