called that....am I imagining things ? ...

Agreed. And when composers wrote things called "melodies" instead of
angular rhythmic declamations.

When I was about 7 or 8 I got given a small "toy"[1] record player (ran
of batteries, could just about play a 7" single). It came with a bunch
of 6" records with various tunes and nursery rhymes. One of which was
that tune...

Dunno about the song but I recall him appearing as a juke box juror. When asked to give a verdict on one of the songs his response was "the only thing that kept me going was the thought that the song couldn't last for ever"

Weren't those acoustic (with a battery motor) like the "laugh boxes"?

Yup the turntable rotation was battery driven, but the tone arm had a
traditional gramophone style pickup complete with needle - so no
electronics at all.
