I've got a DeLonghi "bean to cup" machine that I'm very happy with. No
waste - just compressed grounds which go on the compost. It has a milk
frother but I've never used it.

Hard to prove, of course, but I tried it on the suggestion of a friend who
had had similar problems for years and the change was dramatic. After a few
years of decaf only, I kissed a chap who'd just drunk proper coffee and my
nose blocked up almost immediately - a migraine followed :(

I distrust cafetieres. They have vomited boiling grounds at me too
often. I use a coffee pot and make it rather like tea - warm the pot,
add the freshly ground coffee (quite fine, I don't mind a bit of sludge
in the last cup), pour some just-boiled water on, wait a little (as the
toast toasts) stir and fill up. Is hot and strong and delicious, and I
can do it in my sleep...

PS Lidl's Colombian and Italian beans mixed and ground fine make a very
good and reliable cup of coffee.

Do you mean they vomit when you push the plunger down? I stir the
coffee beforer I put the top bit with mesh etc on and then all is
well, if you push slowly. Like this? Except mine didn't have the
spare mesh filters.

But looking for one I saw a green one I want now..I think I have a
very cheap stove top one too that bubbles through to the top level.

The other method which I have found successful is when first inserting
the plunger press it 1cm below the level of the coffee, then withdraw it
to the liquid surface. This stops the coffee grounds massing just
underneath the mesh which is what gives the extra resistance to plunging
which causes the vomit.

I'd endorse both of those methods. I also make sure I do the plunging
on the draining board with the spout facing away from me[1]; thus any
(rare) regurgitated boiling grounds don't go in my direction and are
easily mopped up.

[1]Perhaps we should just take it as read, Brritski.

Indeed, or it could be grounds for divorce.

A chap after my own heart there.
I want warm milk - in order to not have tepid coffee - but the care and
cleansing of a milk frother attachment is too much of a faf, so I use
the microwave for that.

The bean-to-cup machines are more expensive - and contain too many parts
which can go ping-fugit - for my tastes.

I just don't have milk.

It's done 8 years so far without any problem, so the average cost isn't
so bad.

That's how I get hot milk too. Microwave it.

I have a DeLonghi machine[1] but I think it just has a number, not a
name. It has one-shot and two-shot filters and a special unit for
using ESE coffee pods. I've never used ESE coffee pods or the special
unit - except for the one time I mistook it for the one-shot filter
and made espresso with it. I didn't notice any difference and didn't
realise that I had done it until afterwards.

Hmmm... I mainly use ground coffee but have a fairly cheap Andrew
James(R.I.P) grinder for whole beans[2]. It's probably not the way to
treat it but I find that after the machine has made a fairly coarse
cut, I can persuade it to grind finer and finer by jiggling the
machine up and down while it is working in order that the bigger lumps
of coffee find their way to the blades.

Nick
[1]I also have a couple of differently-sized Moka Express stove top
coffee makers (made somewhat redundant by the DeLonghi), a French
press, mentioned elsewhere, a standard filter coffee brewer and a
willy-warmer on a stick which is very handy for hotel bedrooms.
[2]The Andrew James replaced what I thought would have been a really
nice hand grinder which I bought in a very upmarket coffee shop on the
corner of the Victoria Market in Melbourne, last time I was there.
(Hello Tony - I bet you know the shop I mean)

It looked very nice and was very expensive but I thought I'd rather
take something like that back to Dear Old Blighty than a fluffy
kangaroo or a koala soap bar. What I didn't know was that the grinding
faces had been cast from a unique alloy of butter with marzipan and
hardly succeeded in grinding the first load. By the time I discovered
the problem I was about 12,000 miles too far away to easily take it
back

Oh, I wish! Frankly, after the last couple of months a weekend break in
Mariupol is starting to look like quite an attractive proposition...

R.I.P.? Has the brand gone, then? I have an AJ stainless steel 2-cup
cafetiere which I use every morning[1] and which I like very much. I've
got a couple of other AJ gubbinses, too, and I've considered them to be
a reasonably priced, reliable brand. I'd be sorry if they went.

Why are you spoiling honest beverages with oodles of milk?
When visiting London and a few other places, in the end they forced me
to order black coffee and tea, just because nobody knew the meaning of
what a "little bit of milk" meant.........
I still dont use any milk to spoil my drinks.

Way back when my then household drank coffee, we tried various
brewing methods.

Our stove-top experiment ceased abruptly when we left it on the
cooker to keep warm, after the liquid had boiled through the
grounds. We returned to it to find it sitting at a jaunty angle
as the alloy had melted and flowed through the heating element.

I rarely buy hot drinks when out and about but when I still took milk in
them, found asking for a teaspoon of milk usually did the trick. Of course
the beverage itself was often over-brewed - which is why I rarely buy hot
drinks when out and about.

Well, one man's milk is another man's poison.

I like milk in my coffee. I like a little milk in my tea. I don't like
sugar in either. Just my preference.

Quite. I gave up milk in my coffee during my contracting years when I
spent alternate weeknights staying in a bedsit. It was easier to drink
my morning tea black (and fairly weak) that have to figure out a way of
keeping milk fresh.

Espresso I always drink black and short with half a sachet/teaspoon of
sugar. The cup needs to be preheated so it doesn't cool down the coffee.
Instant/long coffee I prefer with cream.

They went into administration in 2019 but there's still quite a lot of
their product to be found on eBay and Amazon.

There was a time whilst training, working on a power station
site, that I made a pre-mix of coffee, sugar and Marvel. The only
problem was differential settlement due to the particle sizes,
but regular agitation sorted that.

Eventually I realised that the way I decided on the right amount
of powdered milk in my coffee was just sufficient so that I
couldn't taste it. Realising the pointlessness, I took it black
from then on.
