It's a bit pants at the moment isn't it?

I sent a small parcel to Dublin on the 29th December (2021). Low value.
£7.50 postal cost.

It still hasn't arrived.

According to the postal worker I know, there’s a whole chunk of Covid
impact too, with lots of staff absent.

Standard excuses. The UK has always had a tendency to try and avoid
blame, aka making excuses, for things that should be well controllable
and predictable. Staff absent? Employ enough staff in the first place.
Brexit? Yeah, nobody saw that coming or was able to predict what sort
of impact it might have. Leaves on the line? Wrong sort of snow? I
could go on.

Living mainly in CH for the last 20 years has de-acclimatised me to
many such things that were, and indeed still seem to be, common in the
UK. One can't predict everything, of course, but proper contingency
preparation and accountability just don't seem to be a part of much of
the UK's service industry in the saem way that they are here.

There are some areas in the UK that have not had a regular daily delivery
for months due to staff shortages. Brexit is directly responsible in some
cases due to EU residents returning to their home country and very little
movement in the other direction to fill the gaps.

Contigency costs money and affects profitibility.

Cheaper to just cancel stuff.

As well as running a house watching and security service for all the
neighbours when they are away (not seen the next door couple for three
months now) I also seem to be the local parcel intermediary. Large,
small, whatever, when the delivery company can't get anyone to answer
the right doorbell they just stop at our place and lean on the horn.
Just put a second address on for here and I'll take it in for you.

Yet stuff meant for me keeps going missing, apparently some couriers
can't even find the road on Google Maps (it's been there for thirty
years guys...)

I blame satnav.

We take in parcels for neighbours and they for us. A few years ago,
however, we started to find our stuff being delivered in error to an
address with the same street name but a different postcode. Turned out
TomTom at the time had the wrong postcode for us, so stuff went to a
destination a few miles away. Worst example was a garden shed (in parts
obviously). I had to rescue that with my car and trailer.

That, and people defaulting to the first address the satnav offered
without checking properly (there is more than one with the same name and
similar postcodes).

Doesn't happen so much lately, so perhaps TomTom corrected it or all
delivery vehicles use Garmin based systems. The new to us van is TomTom,
must see what that comes up with. I must say I find the interface on the
Fiat TomTom device much more intuitive than the Mazda satnav (whatever
that is based on). As a bonus, it even has a large compass mode -
presumably for heading across open desert, though a quick indicator of
having got completely lost if you have any kind of 'navigational bump'
(phrenologically speaking).

At least you have proper post codes.

Here we have one post code per village.

We live on Calle Casas Nuevas.

There is a street called Calle Nueva with the same post code.

Guess where half our stuff ends up.

My mum used to live on a fairly rural road with about ten houses down it and not much else around for a mile or so. She was Mrs H C Ogden, at Well Cottage. Just across the road was Mrs C H Ogden, at Well House. They got to know each other well enough just by exchanging misdelivered mail.

I'm still waiting for a DHL delivery from my workplace. It was sent
last Wednesday and only today appears to have cleared customs.
