I just watched The Chase (ITV quiz show, m'lud) and am pleased, as
always, that the challengers won, but I'd have been making a complaint
if it had happened that the Chaser won by one "point."

One of the questions was "Seasonal Affective Disorder is known by what
acronym?" The Chaser answered "S.A.D." (he didn't speak the full
stops!) and Bradley Walsh accepted it. But I would say "Wrong!" because
S.A.D. is the abbreviation and SAD is the acronym.

I don't suppose for a moment that I'm AOU.

May I ask how you say/pronounce HIV, ATM, LCD, and RAS, and whether you
consider them acronyms?

Elsewhere in Usenet[1] there have been heated discussions of acronyms,
abbreviations and initialisms.

I enjoy a rather geeky strip cartoon series called xkcd. When I say
geeky I mean that a lot of people know the cartoons by their numbers.
Let me put it to the test: what does https://xkcd.com/386 say to you?
If you know what it is without even clicking the link then you are
probably a little bit geeky.

Anyway, the point is that I only recently found out that Randall
Monroe probably called it xkcd because however hard you try you can
not pronounce xkcd as a word.

This, of course, had me saying the letters out loud to see if there could
possibly be a word hidden in there somewhere.

It reminded me that earlier today, I read a post/tweet, in a set of
parent/child interactions in which the child insisted that dragon was spelt
jragon.

I'll leave you with that - good night ;)

Well, _I_ would spell them all out, not pronounce any of them, and thus
not consider them acronyms. (I wouldn't use the last one as I can never
remember what it stands for.)

HIV and LCD I would also be checking carefully to see if they were being
used with PNS syndrome, as they often are.

No. Watched that part of the episode and thought that should be disallowed.
