I was never sure whether camp (or Camp) was _just_ a trade name, or a
generic term for - say - coffee substitute made from chicory. I always
_assumed_ "camp" was supposed to be a reference to make-do-and-mend as
might have been necessary in (e. g. military) camp.

It was only ever referred to as coffee essence, Camp was never mentioned.

ISTR a Not The Nine O'Clock News sketch in which a few trade union
leaders were deciding on whether to have tea or coffee during a meeting,
along the lines of "So that's 1.3 million votes for coffee and 956,000
votes for tea..."
