I thought it was one of those Guardian 'blind date' articles.

Was wondering what they'd rate each other, whether the table manners were good,
if they went on somewhere else, did they swap numbers, did they kiss and will they
date again.

Seems it was something else.

I'm assuming no bodily fluids were exchanged.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Well....as I think the article[1] says, it was an unusual experience.
Normally, when you meet someone and you detect a difference in a
opinion, most people avoid confrontation, and navigate around the
difference.

Here, the whole point of the meeting was to talk about the things we
disagreed on. We remained polite and friendly, but the differences
very much remained

[1] we were both interviewed, separately, over the phone the day after
the meal, so the content is entirely constructed by the journalist.
But it's accurate enough

The comment about
"Europe with a more Christian background and heritage, and if you come
to Europe from outside you should accept these values, like equality of
men and women, freedom of religion. "

Would have got my back up, just from the inference hat Christians have
always support "equality of men and women" and "freedom of religion".

Historically I don't believe that Christianity has really espoused these
things.

And then there is the Catholic church.

I suspect when he was living in Cheltenham there was some Liberal voting as
they kept the Tories out in that period

My very first vote, in 1983, was for the SDP (as Labour was in
self-destruct mode). Thereafter, I've voted tactically i.e. when I
lived in Cheltenham, I voted LD rather than Labour, as the LDs were
the main challenger to the tories (and held the seat from 1992, losing
it to the tories in 2015)

Sadly, I am 200m outside the Cheltenham constituency, whilst within
Cheltenham Borough for council tax. I don't get the chance to influence a
potential Tory loss. I am in the Tewkesbury constituency so have zero
influence over the result due to an overabundance of stupid.

the virus. The virus isn’t a free-floating thing: it resides in water

Just read that this morning!

Thinking about it, I'm very surprised how the Guardian finds these
readers with very non-Guardian views & values

Welllll, on one hand I suspect Guardian readership may be a broader church than you realise. And on the other I'm not sure they necessarily realise how "non-Guardian" their views and values are. Take the latest guy, for example - he seemed to think they had a lovely time, despite her being in tears at one point. Self-awareness is not some people's strong point.

Good point. From that piece, he struck me as a full-on religious
psychopath

I thought so as soon as I saw his occupation listed as "anti-abortion
campaigner"

>I think you mean a cunt.

It's possible to be a cunt without being a full-on religious
psychopath, but not the other way round.

But yeah, he is.
