Some things never change, much. When I managed IT for a secondary school we
were forever cleaning stuff off of the pupil's laptops. Some smut but vastly
more pirated music and video.

In the 1950s and v early 1960's no IT to manage. Very definitely no
video and few pupils would have access to tape recorders (too
rkcrafvir), to pirate music with.

We made do with smutty magazines, passed hand to hand. I have no idea
what their origins were.

Back then, I discovered that books could be bought from Bookshops in
London and Oxford, posted in brown envelopes to Ireland, read and sold
on. That was the time, about, of the Oz trial. There was one book,
`Cosimo's Wife.', I think, that I sold on.

Years later, a person told that he had an `interesting' book to swap, so
I swapped, and it was `Cosimo's Wife' Very dogeared and stained.

That time, competent writers would write such book for fun, and they
would be published under an alias.

1970s I had a tape recorder - a Grundig reel to reel machine that I
did pirate music (record off the radio - does that count ?) with, but it
certainly never got to fpubby - the only music playing things that did were
the matchbox radios (first the Sinclair then a ZN414 based one that worked
much better). I don't recall any smut circulating at fpubby though, that
was all outside.

Lots of writers kept body and soul together by writing stuff under
pseudonyms, and not just porn. The later 'Saint' books were.

Some writers write under pseudonyms to hide their identity for their
'porn'. Many others, and probably some of the above, to separate out
different styles of output.

In the case of others it is very difficult to understand their use of
pseudonyms. In his early years he used at least 15 different pseudonyms
(source John Simenon, his son). Some early proto-Maigret novels were
published under the name Georges Sim.

He used Christian Brühl, Christian was one of his middle names and Brühl
was the surname of a robber in Limberg, hanged in 1743 who was one of
his ancestors.

It would be like me publishing under the name David Peace; Charlie Peace
being an ancestor who was a well known murder hung in Armley Jail. Now
there is an idea, I am sure I have a novel or two in me.
